First OE fitment for Michelin connected road-legal track tyre

Michelin has launched a new Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect road-legal track tyre. Intended for 80 per cent track use, the Connect version of the Pilot Sport Cup 2 has an integrated container for a sensor. This makes it the first 100 per cent connect-ready tyre on the market. Users need only insert the Michelin Track Connect solution sensors. This allows drivers to optimise their performance during track days. Further improvements to the tyre construction and tread have helped Michelin offer a tyre that improves on the base Pilot Sport Cup 2, itself a favourite fitment of GT racing models. The tyre will receive its world premiere as original equipment on the BMW M2 CS.

Pirelli confirms tyre nominations for rescheduled F1 calendar

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli has confirmed the compound choices for the first eight 2020 grands prix. Pirelli has made two interesting decisions in this list. First, the softest C5 compound will not feature, a fact most probably informed by the lack of a street circuit in the current calendar. Secondly, the Silverstone double-header on 2 and 9 August will get two different sets of compounds, with C1-3 at the first grand prix, and C2-4 at the second. This will provide an interesting comparison for fans, and gives the tyre manufacturer another chance to discuss the effects different tyre compounds can have on F1 racing.

Falken to start Nürburgring testing ahead of NLS2 racing

Falken Motorsports will resume its 2020 testing at the at the Nürburgring on 15 June. The Sumitomo tyre brand’s team will run its two Porsche 911s in the first official NLS test session since restrictions lifted. Klaus Bachler and Martin Ragginger will share one of the 2020 spec 991.2 GT3 R Porsches, whilst Sven Müller and Dirk Werner will pilot the other. Falken adds that it will race at NLS2 and 3 on 11-12 July.

Electric cars shaping up as growth pole as recovery builds – GlobalData

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a rise of nearly 58 per cent rise in global electric vehicles sales in the first five months of 2020. The Korean car maker has sold 40,182 units in the period. David Leggett, automotive analyst at GlobalData, says: “Hyundai’s success reflects strong demand in Europe for recently-launched electric vehicles such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and Ioniq as well as Kia Niro and the Soul EV.

ECP launches back-to-work packs to help garages reopen safely

Euro Car Parts has created a new product bundle to help garages access essential cleaning equipment and PPE. Garages can buy a ‘Back to Work Pack’ complete with a 500ml antibacterial hand sanitising gel, a 500ml surface disinfectant spray, 25 pairs of gloves, 25 large, heavy duty refuse bags and six 2-ply blue rolls.

Two-thirds British workshops open – GiPA garage survey

On the ninth consecutive week of lockdown in the UK, two thirds of British workshops were open, according to the GiPA garage survey. This average includes franchised dealers, independent motor traders and tyre dealers, as well as national chains. Motorcycle registrations improve in May, though still 50% down

Motorcycle showrooms had to stay closed in May although workshops could remain open to facilitate repair. As a result, it is remarkable that 5,394 new machines were put on the road in May, the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) says. This is about half the number of units registered a year ago when motorcycle dealerships were fully open, and customers were not asked to remain at home.

Car scrappage scheme would quickly benefit UK economy – GlobalData

A car scrappage scheme to boost UK vehicle sales was reported to be unlikely this week, quelling hopes of a subsidised shift towards electric cars. However, according to Calum MacRae, automotive analyst at data and analytics company GlobalData, such a move would benefit the country’s economy. “Just a few days ago, it seemed that a £6,000 new car purchase incentive scheme was close to being signed-off, but it looks like the Treasury is now considering a wider-ranging fiscal stimulus package that will forego specific incentives for the automotive sector.

Bridgestone to supply Turanza Eco for Fiat 500 La Prima and VW ID.3

Bridgestone has confirmed that it will supply its Turanza Eco as original equipment on the VW ID.3 electric car. In doing so, the tyre manufacturer joins Continental and Goodyear in supplying rubber for the model. The Turanza Eco is equipped with Bridgestone’s Enliten technology, which reduces weight. This is a popular characteristic among auto manufacturers, especially in the electric car segment, as they seek to reduce both weight and rolling resistance from the tyres.

Yokohama-sponsored Chelsea FC Women awarded league title

Yokohama-sponsored Chelsea FC, have been named champions of the 2019/20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League. With a game in hand, the Blues were in second place and a point behind Manchester City when the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a meeting by the FA board, it was decided to finish the league prematurely and award the title on a points-per-game basis. In addition to securing victory for Chelsea, the decision also confirms the team’s qualification for next season’s Women’s Champions League.

Cooper Tire equips UK mountain search and rescue teams

Cooper Tire Europe has increased its involvement in UK mountain search and rescue operations. The tyre manufacturer is providing support to teams across England and Wales. As part of the initiative, several teams are now equipped with Cooper 4×4 tyres.

Absolute Alignment sales ‘back to pre-lockdown level’

Four wheel alignment equipment supplier, Absolute Alignment says its May sales have “matched pre-lockdown figures in March.” The company has adapted its work practices to protect customers and staff and adhere to government pandemic guidelines. Hankook wins platinum medal for CSR engagement, sustainability

Tyre manufacturer Hankook has received a platinum medal for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement. The medal was awarded by the French rating agency Ecovadis in particular recognition of Hankook’s sustainability initiatives. The medal is awarded to companies in the top one per cent of their industry sector.

EU tyre label regulation update published

The European Union has published the new tyre labelling regulation, after it was confirmed by a vote in May. Appearing in the Official Journal of the European Union last Friday, the act will now come into effect as planned on 1 May, 2021.
