The Michelin Group informed the 619 employees at its tyre production facility in La Roche-sur-Yon, France this morning that it will close the site by the end of next year. In addition, 74 people at Michelin’s Cholet plant, employees working in roles related to the supply of rubber mixed to the La Roche-sur-Yon site, are also affected by the closure.
Car review website Carbuyer.co.uk says UK motorists have given space saver spare wheels and puncture repair kits an “overwhelming thumbs down”. Just over two years after groundbreaking, Nokian Tyres officially opened its new North American production facility. A ceremony was held at the Dayton, Tennessee plant on 2 October to mark the start of operations. The latest Nokian forestry tyre is on its way, and Nokian Tyres says it offers “true next generation features for six-wheel forestry machinery”. The Nokian Forest King TRS 2+ will be available from the end of 2019 in sizes 600/65-34, 710/55-34 and 710/70-34. A new generation of Dunlop enduro tyre has arrived. Dunlop says its Geomax Enduro EN91 builds on the knowledge the tyre maker has gained at world championship level to deliver “incredibly versatile performance for a wide range of off-road riders.” The EN91 replaces the Geomax Enduro D909.
Bridgestone is considering increasing production capacity at its tyre factories in South Africa in order to gain market share in the country’s minibus taxi segment. It appears to be looking at investing around ZAR 300 million (£16.1 million) in its plants, a capex additional to the ZAR 400 million investment it is currently completing at the company’s main production site in Brits.
Titan International, Inc. has reduced its shareholding in steel wheel manufacturer Wheels India Limited. It sold, via a wholly-owned subsidiary, a 10.4 per cent stake in Wheels India on 3 October, thereby dropping its share in the company from 34.2 to 23.8 per cent. Titan International intends to use the net proceeds of approximately US$19 million received from the transaction to pay down outstanding indebtedness.
Hankook Tire reports that it has been supplying the Porsche Cayenne ex-works with its flagship UHP tyre, the Ventus S1 evo 3 SUV, since June. The mixed fitment sees the Cayenne wear the Ventus S1 evo 3 SUV in size 285/40 ZR 21 (109Y) XL at the front and 315/35 ZR 21 (111Y) XL at the rear.

Bridgestone Corporation will supply solar car tyres to 32 teams participating in the 2019 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC), for which Bridgestone is the naming rights sponsor. The narrow, wide diameter tyres utilise Bridgestone’s ‘Ecopia with ologic’ fuel-efficient tyre technology.
Michelin, IFPEN, and Axens have announced the construction of an industrial-scale prototype of a plant for producing butadiene from bioethanol. The plant is located in France and is the first facility of its kind.
