American football isn’t a mainstream sport in Europe – not yet, anyway. But its fanbase on this side of the Atlantic is growing, and audience numbers will be helped by next month’s 2019 IFAF Women’s European Championship in the UK and – starting next week – the 2019 U19 European Championship in Bologna, Italy. Off-highway tyre maker BKT is presenting sponsor of the latter event.
Goodyear is making headlines for its global motorsport comeback, but is by no means the only tyre maker presenting its latest tyres for the 2020 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at this week’s Prologue test. Michelin says it has also brought its freshly-developed endurance tyres to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain to give teams and drivers a “valuable opportunity” to fine-tune their cars’ set-ups ahead of the WEC season opener at Silverstone on 1 September.
Bridgestone Americas says it is honoured to be one of FCA’s Supplier of the Year awardees in the North America region. The tyre maker was one of 19 supplier partners acknowledged at the 2019 annual Supplier Conference and Award Ceremony in Detroit.
Nissan’s Russian manufacturing operation has acknowledged tyre maker Yokohama a Nissan Best Supplier Award. Igor Boitsov, general director of Nissan Manufacturing Rus LLC, presented the award to LLC Yokohama R.P.Z. at a ceremony in St. Petersburg.
A new Continental light commercial vehicle tyre range is being rolled out. It’s called the VanContact Eco, and Continental says the tyre offers “offers impressively high mileage, delivers precise handling and short braking distances on wet and dry roads” as well as lower rolling resistance than its predecessor, the ContiVanContact 200. This claim is backed up by the range’s EU tyre label rating – key VanContact Eco sizes come with an A/A rating for wet braking and fuel efficiency.
Continental has readjusted the full-year 2019 outlook for its tyre-making Rubber Group, primarily in response to declining global car and light vehicle production. It has also readjusted the outlook for its Automotive Group business for the same reason.
Teams from the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will take to the track for ‘Prologue’ pre-season testing at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya tomorrow. One of the most significant moments of this anticipated public test session will be the return of Goodyear to international competition.

Wheely-Safe reports that Aberdeen City Council is fitting Michelin Tyre Pressure Management System (TPMS) Light Fleet across 200 new Renault light commercial vehicles. It has been specified on all new Renault Kangoo, Master and Trafic vehicles – comprising a mix of panel vans, plus chassis cabs with Derby, dropside and tipper bodies – joining the council’s vehicle fleet in 2019.
Two further sizes have joined the Nokian HTS G2 E-4 range of cross-ply tyres for empty container handlers and forklifts. The addition of the new sizes 14.00-24 and 16.00-25 doubles the number of available sizes. All dimensions are available in two versions – the slick Nokian HTS G2 L-4S and the Nokian HTS G2 E-4, which features a chamfered pattern blocks for easy turning.
The latest tyre test from Auto Bild Klassik sets out to determine whether “classic tyres with today’s technology can make the driving behaviour of yesterday’s sports cars even more dynamic and, most importantly, safer.” To do this, the German magazine’s test team fitted eight 185 R15 (today’s 185/80 R15) classic car tyre brands to a 1960s Austin Healy 3000.
Sailun Tyre has entered into its first major global sports partnership with the start of a new sponsorship agreement with Spanish football club Valencia CF. The tyre maker will serve as an official global partner and official tyre partner for the next three seasons, with the Sailun name displayed on players’ jerseys.
Passenger car tyre production and capacity at Apollo Tyres’ Gyöngyöshalász plant in Hungary has steadily grown over the past two years. These respectively reached 2.1 million and almost 3 million units a year by the end of March 2019, and Apollo is still ramping up in Hungary. It’s a different story in Enschede, some 700 miles to the west, but Apollo Tyres says it isn’t preparing to end car tyre production in the Netherlands any time soon.
It’s Swamp Soccer time again, and Nokian Tyres is ready for two days of boggy fun. The tyre maker returns this year as title sponsor, a status it has now held for more than a decade.
