Aston Martin has named Pirelli an official technical partner for its Rapide E. The first all-electric Aston Martin will be equipped with Pirelli P Zero tyres as original equipment, but as Pirelli comments, there’s “no such thing as a generic P Zero anymore.” Instead, each P Zero tyre is “created specifically for the model it is fitted to.”
The UK government identifies tyres as potentially responsible for up to ten per cent of the microplastics in the world’s oceans, and some research conducted abroad suggests this proportion could be much higher. A study from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) indicates that 28.3 per cent of all primary microplastics may come from tyre/road wear (this figure rises to 46.2 per cent when the IUCN includes both natural and synthetic rubber in its scenario), and earlier this year a marine biologist from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research singled out tyres as a “major influence” upon the presence of microplastics in our oceans. Taking such research at face value, it is feasible that the ‘dieselgate’ scandal could be followed at some stage by ‘tyregate’. Yet the tyre industry asserts that tyre/road wear isn’t the environmental and health risk some claim it to be. Continental’s Nikolai Setzer recently discussed this side of the argument.

Giti Tire has started the global rollout of its ‘Giti Ambassador Program’, a new scheme that aims to bring together social media-savvy drivers who share a passion for driving and Giti tyres.
On 1 September 2018, Chinese vehicle manufacturer FAW Group Corporation signed a product technical cooperation framework agreement with Shandong Linglong Tire. The two parties intend to collaborate on the development of tyres for new models produced by FAW.
Sumitomo Rubber Industries has begun supplying its Falken Ziex ZE001 A/S to Subaru Corporation as an original equipment tyre for its new Forester, which goes on sale this autumn. The Forester will be available with a factory-fitted size 225/55R18 98H version of the Ziex ZE001 A/S in North American and Chinese markets.
Nokian Heavy Tyres has introduced a successor to the Nokian MPT Agile, and it says this new-generation tyre offers “several improvements over the original.” The Nokian MPT Agile 2 takes up its predecessor’s remit of offering manoeuvrability, grip and reliability both on and off the road and at any speed; the tyre is aimed at defence and peacekeeping applications, rescue vehicles and off-road trucks.
The range of Falken Eurowinter HS01 tyres available for the coming winter has grown by a half. Falken Tyre Europe shares that a total of 99 dimensions in 13- to 20-inch rim diameters will be offered, up from 66 and covering most widely-used sizes. The Eurowinter HS01 SUV, introduced a year after the April 2016-launched car range and previously available in ten sizes, is growing to 39 sizes for winter 2018-19.
As of next month, the Valtra A Series tractor will be available with Continental tyres as original equipment. AGCO’s homologation of the Tractor70 and Tractor85 hands Continental its very first agricultural tyre original equipment approval since its return to the segment late last year. Continental agricultural tyres are already available from Valtra Unlimited Studio, the manufacturer’s in-house customisation workshop that fits accessories and equipment not available directly from the production line.
New production machinery within the Rosava factory in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine has equipped the plant to make larger tyre sizes, and the first 19-inch car tyres to be manufactured there have now come to market. The first 19-inch fitment available is the Premiorri Solazo S Plus summer tyre in size 245/40 R19.

Driverless cars? Continental had those 50 years ago…It is exactly half a century today since the tyre maker demonstrated its first electronically controlled driverless car at its Contidrom facility in Germany. In those days a car cruising the Contidrom circuit without someone behind the wheel was a novel sight, to say the least, and Continental recalls that more than 400 newspapers, magazines, radio stations and television channels reported on the events of 11 September 1968.
German online tyre retailer Delticom AG shares that after “settling the differences” between the company and Thierry Delesalle, it has reached “an amicable agreement” on the conditions for terminating Delesalle’s Managing Board employment contract and for his dismissal as a member of Delticom’s Managing Board.
Bridgestone intends to invest a further HUF 9.2 billion (£25.3 million) in its Tatabánya tyre factory in Hungary. According to information published by Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the investment will cover the construction of a 10,000 square metre warehouse and also facilitate an expansion of production capacity, as announced last year, to 7.2 million tyres per annum by 2020. Hungary’s government will contribute HUF 826 million (£2.3 million) towards the project.
Today the Reifen show opens its door for the 30th time, and for first time ever the tyre trade fair is taking place outside of Essen (Germany). Reifen has relocated to Frankfurt and Automechanika, and this year’s new-format show has attracted around 160 exhibitors.
