Pirelli has been presented with the 2014 BMW Supplier Innovation Award, a prize that the German manufacturer gives to its most innovative suppliers every year. Prominent tyre legislation campaigner, Frances Molloy has described the Secretary of State for Transport’s response to the issue of aged tyres in the market as “weak and lacking in leadership”. Molloy is lobbying the government to change the law on the fitment of over-age tyres, and gave a powerful presentation during Brityrex International’s TyreTalk seminar programme in Manchester. Describing the coalition government of being “anti-legislation”, Molloy vowed to maintain her campaign until the government introduces legislation to restrict the fitment of old tyres on Public Service Vehicles.
The winners of the 2014 Tyre Industry Awards were announced on 8 October at the 85th annual NTDA Dinner. The awards once again generated wide interest within the British industry, with 14,000 votes cast across the five voting categories. In the Tyre Centre of the Year category, Encircle Marketing’s series of mystery shopping exercises dictated the winner; all four finalists were rewarded by a plaque.

Evergreen and Grouptyre supported grassroots racer Dan Zelos recently scored a podium double at his home race in the 2014 Ginetta Junior Championship at Snetterton. Starco has opened a new solid tyre manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka. The new facility, which has a capacity of 100,000 tyres per annum, replaces the original Starco facility in the country three years after starting production, and Starco states that the success of the venture has led to the need for a larger, more modern and better equipped factory. Starco continues that much attention has been paid to employee health and safety and welfare A Sri Lankan ceremony, in which the new workplace and its employees and management were blessed according to the local Buddhist tradition, was held in September to mark the opening.
British aviation tyre manufacturer, Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has identified a site in Mocksville, North Carolina as the preferred base for its first retreading facility in the United States. The world’s only specialist aircraft tyre manufacturer and retreader announced its decision to establish the facility in order to boost its competitiveness across the Americas.
Giti Tire’s Michael Kaletta (45) has died suddenly, following a heart attack on Friday 26 September. A small private ceremony attended by family, friends and many of his colleagues was held on 2 October. The company described itself as shocked and saddened by Kaletta’s untimely passing.
