It’s been dormant for a long while, but now Armstrong is back: Partnering with Netherlands-based tyre wholesaler Van den Ban, this week Zafco launched the next generation of Armstrong tyres at The Tire Cologne.

Regional hub boosts ATS Euromaster’s industrial, earthmover capabilities
ATS Euromaster has opened a new dedicated hub centre, expanding mobile tyre maintenance support for quarrying, mining, ports and industrial operators across Yorkshire and the North East. Based in Redcar, the ATS Euromaster hub provides a specialist central headquarters for a mobile service fleet for heavy vehicles, supporting operators with tyre and vehicle maintenance at their own sites in the area from Sheffield to Teesside.
Hankook releases new generation all-season tyre
Look carefully for the superscript – Hankook Tire has unveiled its fifth generation of all-season tyre for Europe. It’s called the Hankook Kinergy 4S², and despite the naming similarities is a completely redeveloped product. The Kinergy 4S² comes to market in June 2018 with a launch range of 17 sizes in the 14- to 17-inch rim diameter bracket. From the second half of the year, the range will be expanded to 64 sizes for 14- to 20-inches.
Bridgestone announces OE approvals for BMW bikes
The Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41 has been selected as original equipment for a series of BMW motorcycles in the adventure category. Bikes to be fitted with Bridgestone rubber include the BMW R 1200 GS, which will wear the Battlax Adventure A41 in size 120/70 R19M/C 60V (front) and 170/60 R17M/C 72V (rear). This latest OE approval also covers the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, BMW F 750 GS and BMW F 850 GS.
Work begins on Nokian Tyres’ technology centre in Spain
A groundbreaking ceremony held today marked the start of construction work on a new testing and technology centre being set up by Nokian Tyres in Spain. Festivities to celebrate the occasion were held at the site in Santa Cruz de la Zarza. Nokian Tyres anticipates the completion of the first test tracks next year ahead of the technology centre attaining full operational status in 2020.

SRI wins tyre puncture repair technology infringement case
After almost eight years, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) has won the lawsuit it filed against Italian manufacturer TEK Automotive S.r.l. concerning the infringement of SRI’s patents on emergency tyre puncture repair kit technology.
Continental introducing ‘Port Plus’ compound into harbour tyre range
A new compound has been developed for Continental tyres that will see use in harbourside applications. Continental calls this compound Port Plus, and reports that it reduces tyre heat generation, minimises wear and extends tyre life significantly. The Port Plus compound will premiere at TOC Europe in Rotterdam next month.
Tyre tariffs: Aeolus relocating production to Prometeon plants
Aeolus Tyre Co., Ltd. has emphasised its continued commitment to European markets. In a statement, the Chinese tyre maker describes its progress with the Aeolus brand within Europe as a “remarkable” achievement and stresses that the “unique position” it has claimed within the market will continue despite the introduction of anti-dumping duties. To facilitate this, some Aeolus tyre production will be relocated outside of China.
Kumho tyres OE on Volkswagen Atlas
The Volkswagen Atlas is not just the newest member of the VW family, it is also the largest. The seven-seater SUV is primarily aimed at the North American market; however, this heavyweight is also expected to attract buyers in markets such as China, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. Kumho Tire reports that its Kumho Crugen Premium KL33 has been selected as an original equipment tyre for the Atlas, with models rolling off the Volkswagen production line in Chattanooga, Tennessee fitted with the tyre in size 245/60 R18 105T.
Thinking ahead: Hankook Tire preparing for IAA CV
Even though Hankook Tire is now – as are many within the tyre industry – making final preparations for next week’s The Tire Cologne, the tyre maker is already getting ready for the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles fair. Offering a sneak preview of what we can expect to see this September, it shares that the show in Hannover, Germany will host the world premiere of a new Hankook mixed on- and off-road tyre line-up that includes steer, drive and trailer axle fitments. Hankook Tire also intends to announce further growth in its business with truck OEMs.

The new range of Pirelli agricultural tyres and the latest Pirelli truck products will be on display at the Prometeon Tyre Group stand at next week’s The Tire Cologne. These can be found at Stand C48/D49 in Hall 7.
Infinity launching new all-season tyre
The Dubai-based Al Dobowi Group will present a new Infinity all-season tyre at The Tire Cologne next week. Known as the Ecofour, the all-season rubber is coming to market in a launch range of 24 sizes
UK, EU car markets grow in April
The EU passenger car market returned to growth in April 2018 after demand declined in March. According to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, a total of 1,206,273 passenger cars were registered last month, a year-on-year growth of 9.6 per cent. Growth in the UK market exceeded the European average, rising 10.4 per cent year-on-year to 167,911 new registrations.
Goodyear awarded for safety improvement practices
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was recently recognised by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) with a Leadership Award for promoting innovative practices to improve worker safety.
