When Sydney Stapleton set up his business in a simple shop parade at 195 High Street, Watford in 1937 he was one of a number of businessmen taking advantage of the growing market for tyres. Growing his business through the 1950s and ‘60s, his personal renown as one of the industry’s most dynamic characters and an entrepreneur of considerable foresight followed. The location of its headquarters in the vicinity of the M1 is testament to this – in the 1960s Stapleton’s supplied replacement earthmover tyres used to build the Watford-Milton Keynes stretch of the motorway.

There’ll be 100 candles on Yokohama Rubber Company’s cake come 13 October, and as part of its contribution to its parent’s birthday celebrations, Yokohama’s regional head office in Europe has launched a microsite that offers a historical overview of the Japanese firm.
Yokohama will mark its centenary with a social media-led promotional campaign. Counting down the 100 days until 13 October, Yokohama will give its followers the opportunity to win a selection of branded goods, Chelsea FC merchandise and Chelsea FC tickets.
When the Contidrom first opened in 1967, just eight Continental staff members wore employed at the test facility. Avon Tyres’ motorsport team will mark the 60th anniversary of the first ever 100mph lap at this year’s Isle of Man TT (27 May-9 June). Set on Avon tyres, the record-breaking lap was ridden by legendary Scottish rider Bob McIntyre on a four-cylinder Gilera, running on Avon’s Speedmaster GP race tyres.
