Working together with a Japanese university, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) has established a new technique for observing materials contained within tyre rubber. This process differs from existing methods as it enables an evaluation of the actual rubber used in mass-produced tyres rather than relying upon processed test samples. The company behind the Falken tyre brand foresees the technique facilitating the development of tyres with superior performance characteristics.
Nokian Tyres expects that its net sales in 2020 will be below last year’s and operating profit will be “significantly” beneath 2019 levels. Operating profit will primarily be affected by costs related to the company’s expansion in North America and other investment programmes.
Michelin’s plan to close its truck tyre factory in La Roche-sur-Yon, France took a step forward last Thursday when it signed an employee support agreement with four trade unions. The sponsorship agreement between Hankook Tire and Real Madrid has been extended until the end of the 2022/23 season. German workshop machinery and equipment manufacturer Beissbarth GmbH has acquired API Car Systems GmbH, a developer of robotic systems for touchless wheel alignment. Stargate Capital, which acquired Beissbarth along with Sicam in 2018, reports that API Car Systems became a Beissbarth company as of 1 January 2020. It will continue as a separate legal entity, with its headquarters remaining in Leipzig, Germany.

The shortlist of nominees for this year’s Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence have been announced.
