We’re not sure whether a world record exists for the largest tyre logo – it’s a question that has never come up here at Tyrepress.com – but if there is, Pirelli must surely be in the running to claim it. The tyre maker has brought no less than 41 cars together in Monza to recreate a portrayal of the Pirelli logo made in 1978. A dozen prestige marques and 22,000 horsepower went into creating the 80-metre-long, 18-metre-tall logo.
Blame for a -6.3 per cent decline in net sales during the first quarter of 2018 goes to the stronger euro, reports the Michelin Group. The tyre maker achieved total net sales of 5.2 billion euros in the three months to 31 March 2018, an amount that represents a 1.4 per cent improvement – had exchange rates remained constant. However, with currency effects of 7.7 per cent, Michelin was unable to match the 5.6 billion euros earned in the opening quarter of last year.
Marketing rights to the Interstate tyre brand have been acquired by TBC Corporation this month. This transaction follows the entry of Interstate Tire & Rubber into insolvency late last year. In spite of alternatives such as guayule and Russian dandelion, the Hevea brasiliensis tree will remain an important source of rubber for tyre manufacturers. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company recognises this and has announced a new natural rubber procurement policy. The tyre maker says this new policy “reflects its strong commitment to the responsible sourcing of raw materials” and believes its implementation and adherence will help address deforestation, land grabbing, and human rights in the areas of the world where natural rubber is produced.
Instead of just finding dandelions growing in fields, we may soon also find them in the tyres of tractors and other agricultural vehicles that traverse these fields. Balkrishna Industries Limited (BKT) sees a future for these plants as a material within the tyres it makes; it recently entered into a joint research agreement with US biotechnology company Kultevat, Inc. to develop new compounding methods based on TKS/Russian dandelion rubber, with the aim of integrating these into its tyre manufacturing process.

With 400 metres of exhibition space at The Tire Cologne, the team at Hankook Tire has plenty of room to stretch out. Or to present a broad range of products, including its new all-weather car tyre. The world première of this tyre – Hankook is keeping mum about its name – will take place at Stand A050, in Hall 6.1.

Having supplied 35,000 dumper truck tyres and wheels in the UK last year – 100 per cent of all dumper tyres for new trucks in our market – STARCO knows a thing or two about looking after these products. It’s therefore worth taking note when the company warns of the potential danger and additional cost of operating at low air pressure.
