Nokian Tyres’ mission statement is to provide motorists with “peace of mind in all conditions,” and Central Europe region SVP Bahri Kurter says Nokian is taking the “all conditions” aspect literally. Interest in products beyond its established winter business has grown in recent years and driven the launch of new summer tyres such as the Powerproof and Wetproof. Now Nokian Tyres is turning its attention to the growing all-season segment.

Nokian Tyres has sold its Vianor US business to Oregon-based Point S member Gills Point S Tire. The transaction covers ten Vianor service centres, with all current Vianor US service centre employees will be taken on by Gills Point S Tire & Auto Service.
Exide Technologies has launched an app to aid workshops when testing batteries. It enables technicians to analyse battery test results and provide customers with battery replacement options within five minutes. Exide notes that as issues requiring replacement may be discovered in more than 20 per cent of tested batteries, using the app opens up a “valuable new revenue stream” for workshops, and helping motorists avoid unexpected failures. It adds that this solution is the first of its kind on the market.
According to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), UK car manufacturing output fell 20.8 per cent in July, with just 85,696 units rolling off production lines during the month. Despite the continued ramp-up of production and reopening of almost all factories following the easing of lockdown measures, social distancing measures and ongoing economic uncertainty still stifled output. Today’s figures follow news that BMW intends to lay off 400 of the 950 agency personnel working at its Mini factory in Oxford.
Ceat Limited commissioned the second phase of its Nagpur plant in India’s Maharashtra state on Monday. The tyre maker says the two-wheeler tyre capacity added by this expansion project will be “be ramped up over a period of time, based on market demand and our overall capacities.”

Continental’s review of its involvement with the National Socialist government in Germany is being supported by the findings of an independent academic study, which was presented this morning.
German motorcycling magazine Motorrad MO has recommended a trio of brands in its test of a half-dozen roadgoing sports tyres. MO fitted the candidates to a Triumph Street Triple RS and evaluated their performance in a range of parameters, publishing the results in its September 2020 edition.
German tyre retailer and fast fit network ATU has announced plans to close up to 45 of its least profitable outlets. It says this culling of the weak is being carried out as a means of “strengthening the entire company.”
Sailun Tire has entered into a partnership agreement with China’s Apex Motorsport. The deal, signed on 21 August by Apex Motorsport’s Jin Yi and Chen Zheng, deputy director of Sailun Motorsport, gives Apex global sales rights for Sailun Sports Tires including the full range of Sailun Gene R tyres. Sailun believes this agreement marks its “successful shift from the prosumer market to the consumer market following three years of racing events that put Sailun Tire products to various stringent tests.”
As of 24 August, Tytti Bergman is no longer Nokian Tyres’ senior vice president, People and Culture. The tyre maker shares that Bergman has left the company “to pursue other career opportunities.” Tarja Kaipio, vice president, Human Resources, has stepped into the position on an interim basis until a permanent successor is appointed.
Magna Tyres has expanded its portfolio of ‘Made in Holland’ products with the introduction of the Magna M-Terrain E4/L4 in size 29.5R25. This particular dimension, which was specifically developed for medium and large wheel loaders as well as articulated dump trucks, has been part of the M-Terrain line-up for many years. In addition to being made in the Netherlands, production of the tyre will also continue in China.
In order to prevent damage from ‘friendly fire’, Titan International Inc. has issued a statement distancing itself from the spat between US President Donald Trump and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Titan wants to make it clear that there is absolutely no link between it and the alleged Goodyear diversity training document that’s circulating on the internet.
Establishing offices in Canada and the USA last year have helped Magna Tyres Group gain a foothold in the North American off-highway tyre market, and the company reports demand for its products “rising rapidly” since the US office opened its doors in September 2019. A new sales manager now joins this office. Ryan Cusick has come on board to help Magna Tyres “focus even more on the brand presence, the distribution network and relationship with current and new customers.”
Sensata Technologies, the company behind the Schrader TPMS equipment brand, has appointed Russ Stebbins general manager of the Global Aftermarket business unit. He brings more than 25 years of automotive experience to his new role, including positions with well-known brands such as TRW, Lumileds, and Akebono Brake Corporation in the past decade.
