The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) says it “applauds” the recent formation of the bipartisan Congressional Tire Caucus, co-chaired by Joe Wilson and Jim Cooper, members of the House of Representatives from South Carolina and Tennessee, two states with significant tyre manufacturing footprints.
In February, Titan International disclosed it was “evaluating its strategic alternatives” regarding its Italtractor ITM S.p.A. (ITM) steel track and undercarriage business. It engaged Shore Capital as its financial advisor in carrying out this evaluation. Paul Reitz, the company’s president and chief executive officer, reports that Titan is making “positive progress” with respect to one potential alternative, a public listing within Europe.
By taking advantage of synergies arising from its acquisition by Kenda in 2017, STARCO has introduced its UK-made Flex lite wheel solution to the US market. Kenda USA subsidiary Martin Wheel presented this European market top-seller at a trade show in Las Vegas last week. Well-known industry insurance company Jelf reports that it has designed specific insurance programmes for the tyre sector in collaboration with the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA). According to Jelf, the insurance market for the tyre industry is diminishing quickly with only a small number of motor trader insurers willing to write insurance policies.

Stapleton’s (Tyre Services) Ltd has joined the International Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA). According to the association, Stapleton’s joins ITMA “following the recent addition of an Asian tyre brand to its portfolio”. ITMA now has 23 members, nine of which appear in Tyres & Accessories’ top 20 leading tyre manufacturers ranking.
TomTom is set to return roughly 750 million euros to its shareholders after the sale of TomTom Telematics to Bridgestone for 910 million euros closed in April 2019. According to the company, TomTom will return the money on 27 May, through a consolidation of shares. Telecom Paper reported that for every 16 shares, nine will remain, resulting in the repayment of 5.74 euros per remaining share. This is said to be equivalent to 3.22 euros per share, based on the number of outstanding shares before consolidation.
Michelin has agreed to buy the entire share capital of Masternaut, one of the largest European telematics providers, for an undisclosed amount. While not price details have been released, according to the company, the transaction has been made on the basis of eight-times 2018 EBITDA before synergies. Masternaut will continue to operate under its own brand as a fully-owned subsidiary within Michelin, and the transaction is expected to close within the next sixty days.

Continental will introduce its new radial port tyre portfolio at this year’s TOC Europe in Rotterdam. Developed to meet the demands of vehicles used for terminal operations, the newly expanded port portfolio is specifically designed for load and carry applications. The company also emphasises its service provision and aim to become a full solutions provider for port operations, referencing its slogan, ‘Every move you make’. Continental Commercial Specialty Tires (CST) will show its complete port product range at the trade fair, including V.ply tyres, radial tyres, and digital solutions on 18-20 June at booth D72 in Hall 1 at Rotterdam Ahoy.
Continental has continued the process of providing a complete service solution for the OTR segment, introducing a new ContiEarth range of tyres tuned for various applications and its latest tyre monitoring technology for a sector defined by its variable operating conditions. OTR tyres are often used to extract and haul raw materials on gravelly, rocky or sandy terrain, or transport building materials on unpaved roads at construction sites: for these and other applications, they can be mounted on a wide variety of construction vehicles and machinery.
