In addition to saving money, truck fleet operators can reduce their vehicles’ environmental footprint by adopting a tyre programme that includes retreading. In light of the current public debate about CO2, Continental has shared on how its ContiRe retreads can help.
Vacu-Lug has begun production of Hankook’s Alphatread truck tyre range at its factory in Grantham, Lincolnshire. The bead-to-bead retread tyre range is designed for medium haul fleets, and consists of four sizes. The European Commission has issued notice that it will initiate an anti-dumping proceeding focusing on imports of truck and bus tyres originating in the People’s Republic of China. The Commission is taking this course of action as a result of a complaint received on 30 June by the “coalition against unfair tyres imports,” a group representing the interests of manufacturers who account for more than 45 per cent of all new and retreaded truck and bus tyre production in the European Union.
It isn’t just copycats in China that the tyre majors are going after. Michelin North America reports that it filed a lawsuit against Tire Recappers of Nashville yesterday. Michelin alleges that the manufacturer and seller of retreaded SUV, crossover and crossover tyres infringed design patents covering the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 and Michelin LTX M/S2 tyres.
Increased permissible weights for commercial vehicles in Europe is driving demand for high load truck tyres, and in response Goodyear has launched new mould cure retread High Load (HL) trailer tyres. The new retreads are the TreadMax KMAX T HL and TreadMax SP246 HL, both in size 385/65R22.5.

Giti Tire has renamed its UK retread programme Giti Genesis as part of its European truck and bus rebranding project. Originally known as GT REE-Tread, the next-generation products will keep the continuity of hot cure bead-to-bead retread tyres only manufactured using Giti casings. Retreading will be conducted in partnership with a leading UK-based operation. Giti Genesis is available in two patterns: the GDR690 regional drive axle tyre is available in 295/80R22.5, 315/70R22.5 and 315/80R22.5; the GTR990 regional trailer tyre is offered in size 385/65R22.5.

Although not all the big names in the OTR tyre sector were present this year at Bauma, Bridgestone said it was “only natural” for it as a major supplier to be there. The Japanese manufacturer’s tyre activities were represented at the construction and mining segments trade fair by a new crane tyre range, new sizes and original equipment fitments, and Bridgestone also placed a particular focus upon its ‘Total Tyre Care’ concept. This now includes a recently-commenced partnership with German retreading specialist, Rösler Tyre Innovators.

Bridgestone says its Lincolnshire retreading facility played “a huge role” in its latest fleet contract win. Leading haulage company Maxi Haulage agreed the fleet deal with the tyre manufacturer, coinciding with the 10 year anniversary of Bridgestone’s acquisition of Bulldog in Bourne, which boasts an output of roughly 50:50 mould cure to pre-cure. As a result of this ratio, the company says the operation stands out in the historically mould cure dominated UK retreading market.
