Bridgestone strengthens motocross grip with Crescent Yamaha

Crescent Yamaha has opted to fit Bridgestone’s Battlecross tyres as it strives for success in the ACU British Championship and MX Nationals series. The official Yamaha UK-supported team will compete for podiums with the latest GYTR-equipped 2019 YZF bikes. Northern Ireland’s Martin Barr will compete in MX2 on the all-new 2019 Yamaha YZ250F in MX2, while Bournemouth’s Jake Shipton will continue in the premier MX1 class with the 2019 Yamaha YZ450F.

Do markets dream of electric cars?

Phillip K Dick may well have been thinking far further into the future than the current popularisation of electric cars when he wrote his famous novella “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, however the rise of big data alongside electric and autonomous vehicles means the most advanced cars of today have an increasing amount in common with the artificial intelligence in the source material for the film Blade Runner.

Yokohama Advan original equipment on new BMW X5 M Performance model

Practical emergence of RFID unlocks data opportunities

The industrialisation of big data has been progressing quickly in recent years within the automotive segment. TPMS sensor technology and the networks they feed data into have enabled increasingly sophisticated software systems to be created to use the massive amount of data we are now able to collect more effectively. Such systems are also able to increase the business applications of another technology, radio-frequency identification, or RFID, helping commercial tyre distribution chains to increase cost, time, and safety efficiency as well as accuracy in their collection of data. Steve Daly, commercial director of CAM, the provider of e-jobsheet, TiDaeX, and the Online Tyre Catalogue, told Tyres & Accessories about the opportunities RFID is now unlocking, and how future, more affordable reading technology could increase the reach of these gains.

Bridgestone achieves ‘best OEM results’ in 2018

Bridgestone provided more than 120 new original equipment fitments in the EMEA region during 2018, an increase of more than 30 per cent. The fitments are spread across more than 40 different models from 15 different manufacturers. The tyre manufacturer, which is the largest in the world, says the commitment of such brands as Toyota, Mercedes, and Porsche, shows the original equipment manufacturers’ appreciation for its investment in research and development.

Prinx Chengshan invests £19 million in purchasing land for new Thailand tyre factory

Having rejected earlier plans for a new tyre factory in Malaysia, Prinx Chengshan has invested 170.6 million yuan (£19.464 million) in buying at least 433,600 square metres of land in at Tambon Nong Suea Chang, Amphur Nong Yai, and Tambon Klong-Kew, Amphur Ban-Bung, Chonburi province in Thailand. According to stock exchange filings dated 25 December 2018, the deal comprises “several plots of land” and will be funded by the company’s recent global share offering.

Hankook promotes Brett Emerson to UK managing director

Hankook Tire has appointed Brett Emerson as managing director for the UK effective 1 January 2019. Emerson brings over 30 years’ experience in the tyre industry, including nearly five years at Hankook in the role of UK sales director. He takes over the position from Jong Jin Park who has now relocated to Hankook’s American Headquarters to assume a new role.

FinTyre buys RS Exclusiv Reifengrosshandel and TyreXpert Reifen + Autoservice

European FinTyre Distribution (EfTD) has signed a binding agreement to acquire two key players in the German tyre market: RS Exclusiv Reifengrosshandel GmbH and TyreXpert Reifen + Autoservice GmbH. As a result of the acquisition EfTD now has a total turnover of 740 million euros in Germany and project annual unit sales of 8.5 million tyres.

Schrader Performance Sensors to launch motorcycle TPMS sensors at AutoZum

Schrader Performance Sensors, the automotive aftermarket brand of Sensata Technologies, will launch two new motorcycle TPMS OE replacement sensors into the aftermarket at AutoZum in Salzburg, Austria (16-19 January 2019). Pro-Align advocates solutions for complete tyre care in TPMS age

With all new cars now coming equipped with TPMS, uneven tyre wear as a result of under (or over) inflated tyres should theoretically become a thing of the past. That theory has yet to materialise in practice; the latest Department for Transport figures reveal that around 1,000 casualties are caused every year on the UK’s roads from tyre-related incidents. And perhaps the brave new world of tyre safety promised by required TPMS fitments may have been inspired by too much blue sky thinking anyway. With many drivers now relying on TPMS systems to advise them when to top up their tyres with air, it is possible that some are checking their tread depth even less frequently than before.

Tamworth motorsport, high performance brakes firm secures £3m finance

A Tamworth based manufacturer of high-performance brake components for the motorsport and performance vehicle market has secured a £3 million finance package from HSBC UK to fund new state-of-the-art machinery to boost production. Pirelli Cyber Fleet available in UK from Q1 2019

Back in September 2018 Pirelli announced that the system it had developed for the monitoring and management of tyres had been renewed. As a result, the company launched two technological solutions at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover – Cyber Fleet Smart and Cyber Fleet Gate – both of which represent the company’s latest engagement with the digital revolution.
