Goodyear Tire & Rubber reports that Peter R. Rapin will succeed Thomas Kaczynski as the company’s treasurer. Rapin joins the tyre maker from TRW Automotive (now part of ZF Friedrichshafen AG), where he most recently directed the company’s global treasury, tax, insurance, and pension functions as vice-president treasury and tax. In his new role he will report to Laura K. Thompson, Goodyear’s executive vice-president and chief financial officer.
Until this year, Continental only produced run-flat tyres at its Aachen and Korbach factories in Germany. However a couple of years ago the company saw a need to expand production of original equipment run-flats in response to growing demand from vehicle manufacturers, and at the end of 2013 the decision was taken to equip the Continental Matador Rubber factory in Púchov, Slovakia to make self-supporting run-flat, or SSR tyres.
Britain’s commercial vehicle manufacturing industry continued its strong recovery in July, with production volumes up 46.3 per cent over the same month last year. A total of 9,274 CVs were built in the month, with output for the UK market posting an especially strong gain of 137.6 per cent.

The new, 3PMSF-marked all-season tyre range that Nokian Tyres first gave word of earlier this year is now available. The Nokian Weatherproof covers 13 to 18-inch fitments and is produced in T, H and V speed ratings, while the Weatherproof SUV can be obtained in 16 to 19-inch fitments and H and V speed ratings. The Weatherproof C is aimed at vans and light commercial vehicles, and Nokian says a large line-up of tyres are available for 14 to 16-inch rim diameters and R to T speed ratings. The Weatherproof C range also includes various tread patterns for larger vehicles and extra load versions.
Starting in September, Continental will introduce a new programme that will train “young people who are passionate about IT” to become automotive software developers. According to Ariane Reinhart, the tyre and automotive systems manufacturer’s Executive Board member in charge of human resources, the training programme will be based in Germany and involve close collaboration between Continental’s various divisions.
Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) is ready to go golfing again. For the second consecutive year, the tyre maker’s US North American manufacturing and marketing operation is teaming up with the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) to host the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. The 2015 tournament will be held between 27 and 30 August in the charming town of Prattville, Alabama. Defending champion Mi Jung Hur is expected to return, along with other top players from last year’s field, including Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome, Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, Chella Choi and Ai Miyazato.
A joint, ongoing study on the social psychology of road safety conducted by Goodyear and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has identified different ways that people respond when interacting with other drivers on the road. The information gained so far comes from the first stage of a two-part study into driving behaviour. LSE researchers worked with focus groups and conducted in-depth interviews to identify how drivers influence each other’s behaviour on the road.
Belshina JSC says it expects sales of its tyres in Pakistan this year will be double the level achieved in 2014. The Belarus-based tyre maker has been exporting to Pakistan since 2001 and in past years shipped 11,000 to 12,000 tyres a year to the country. Most of the tyres Belshina currently sells in Pakistan are agricultural tyres, however the company sees potential for greater volumes there, including sales of truck tyres.
Hakan Bayman, CEO of Brisa Bridgestone Sabancı A.Ş since January 2009, has been appointed senior vice-president of Bridgestone’s CIS/Russia, Middle East and Africa (CMA) region. He begins in this position on 1 September, and while he steps down as CEO of the Bridgestone-Sabanci joint venture company he will remain on the Brisa board. Yiğit Gürçay replaces Bayman in the top Brisa job.

Tyre maker and automotive systems supplier Continental is to serve as a key partner to a four-year global campaign being rolled out to promote awareness of leading vehicle crash avoidance technologies in major emerging markets. The firm’s Tire and Chassis & Safety divisions are supporting the ‘Stop the Crash’ initiative organised by Global NCAP (Global New Car Assessment Programme), the London-based umbrella body of the NCAP organisations that carry out vehicle safety tests around the world. The company also states it will more closely position its Continental tyre brand to the campaign’s long-term goals.

Indian tyre maker TVS Srichakra Ltd has announced the appointment of K P Rangaraj as the company’s chief financial officer, effective 12 August 2015. Mr. Rangaraj has also been designated chief investor relations officer, and in this capacity he will handle issues related to the fair disclosure of unpublished price sensitive information.
A thick skin isn’t necessary for driving in the UK, but it certainly helps. A survey of 2,200 drivers performed for Continental Tyres shows that more than a third permit their assumptions to influence them behind the wheel, while some 45 per cent allow prejudices to affect how courteous or aggressively they act towards other road users – with something as simple as a bumper sticker prompting them to see red.
