Michelin will return as official tyre supplier to the Renault UK Clio Cup next year following four seasons of Dunlop tyre supply. The switch back to Michelin tyres brings the UK championship in line with international Clio Cup competition – as of 2017, the French tyre maker will supply all Clio Cup championships around the world, including those held in Benelux, Bohemia, Central Europe, China, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
Michelin has returned to the top of our annual online brand equity study run in conjunction with Cambridge-based specialists NetNames. The results marks a return to fortunes for the French global player, which has dominated the research for most of the 12 years it has been running until Continental seized first position last year. Indeed, the research has only been topped by three of the tyre majors in its history – Michelin, Continental and Pirelli. However, while the top of the table has been dominated by a select few of the world’s largest tyre manufacturers, some of the biggest gains have been made at the opposite end of the spectrum where the mid-range and economy brands we study have some of the biggest gains.

Kumho’s latest all-season tyre, the Solus HA31, has been accorded a Japanese Good Design Award. So too has the Kumho Eco Sense SE11 – a pattern specifically designed for environmentally friendly and electric vehicles but which, unlike the HA31, isn’t currently available in the UK market.
On 5 October, Sumitomo Rubber (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (SRT), the Sumitomo Rubber Group’s tyre manufacturing and sales subsidiary in Thailand, celebrated the tenth anniversary of operations at its passenger car and agricultural/industrial tyre plant in Rayong Province. The festivities were attended by around 300 guests, including the Governor of Rayong Province, representatives from various government agencies, business partners, customers and factory staff, as well as Ikuji Ikeda, president of Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd (SRI).
A new Marangoni business unit will be formally introduced at the K 2016 trade fair in Germany later this month. The new unit has been named Marangoni Technical Compounds, and Marangoni says its establishment is the result of an investment process in technology, training, and qualifications launched five years ago, and is part of the company’s strategy to penetrate the European technical compounds market with a strong partnership between its Italian and German production sites.
Japan’s Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has signed up as a participant in the International Rubber Study Group’s Sustainable Natural Rubber Initiative (SNR-i). As a result, the tyre maker says it has “now committed itself to enacting measures in conformity with the initiative’s guidelines.”

Following a qualifying round that saw 50 candidates eliminated on the grounds of their wet and snow braking performance, German motoring magazine Auto Bild has now published the results of its 2016 comparative evaluation of winter tyres.
The mission of the FIA Formula E championship is to drive technology from the racetrack to the road, and this means we should be interested in how the second generation of Michelin’s Formula E race tyre performs. The new Pilot Sport EV2’s competitive debut took place at the Hong Kong ePrix on the weekend, allowing us to finally see what Michelin’s claimed “two steps” forward” in development means in terms of performance. Pascal Couasnon, director of Michelin Motorsport, is proud of the evolutionary development present in the second-generation tyre.
The Parts Alliance has announced that Micheldever Tyre Services Ltd has renewed is supply with the firm for a third term. The new contract, worth in excess of £8 million, will run until the end of 2018 and appoints The Parts Alliance for the supply of all vehicle parts, covering Braking, Steering and Suspension, Emission and Service Repair products.

The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle dealers in the UK, has appointed Mark Squires as chairman effective 11 October 2016. Squires succeeds Peter Jones whose tenure as chairman ended on 11 October 2016 following his two years of service.
The Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2017 is now out, and the latest edition includes 20 new Michelin-Starred restaurants across the country, as well as 24 new bib Gourmand entries. The guide sells for £16.99 (€18.99 in Ireland) and is also available as an iPhone and iOS app that includes a function for booking Michelin recommended restaurants online.
TÜV SÜD has shared its thoughts on winter and all-season tyres. While the testing and certification specialist doesn’t wish to cast doubt over the safety advantage winter tyres offer when driving on snow and ice, it also considers all-season tyres a suitable choice for motorists who only drive in flat or lowland regions and spend a lot of time on the motorway.
Bridgestone has completed the roll-out of its new-generation MX line-up with the launch of the Battlecross X10 sand terrain tyre. The tyre features a new tread design that, together with increased block deformation, is said to give riders stronger traction, better self-cleaning and higher sideslip control in all types of sandy conditions. Bridgestone worked with top riders on the MX competition circuit when developing and testing the tyre, and comments that by deploying the new design in its mainstream Battlecross range, it “now makes higher performance on sandy tracks attainable for all riders, from national champions to intermediates and beginners.”
