This year’s IAA commercial vehicle show in Germany will serve as the launch venue for the new Pneuscan Onground system from Ventech Systems. The floor-mounted system can perform automatic tyre pressure and tread inspections on a range of vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, buses and multi-axle trucks. The portability of Pneuscan Onground is expected to be a major selling point for the system.
According to Hankook Tire, one aim of its second tyre brand, Laufenn, is to meet “various lifestyle needs for price conscious motorists across the European region.” The initial Laufenn range for Europe was presented at the IAA motor show in Frankfurt, Germany last September, and three of the five product lines displayed, the Laufenn S FIT EQ, G FIT EQ and X FIT VAN, are now being released in the European market.
Dunlop walked away with a gold OttoCar at yesterday’s AutoVision Awards ceremony in Frankfurt, and Vredestein landed a silver accolade. The biennial awards ceremony took place during the IAA show and saw Goodyear Dunlop Tires honoured for its ‘One Second’ commercial. One Second also won a black award for best direction and best editing. A silver OttoCar award came Apollo Vredestein’s way in recognition of its Vredestein Snowtrac and Quattrac 5 product launch films.
When Tyrepress.com attended the first press day of last year’s IAA Commercial Vehicles show, we were surprised to find ourselves working in halls that effectively doubled as building sites. It turns out we weren’t the only ones to be less than happy with this arrangement, as show organiser VDA (the German Association of the Automotive Industry) says it’ll do things differently next year. In response to “a large number of requests from the media and exhibitors,” the press days at the 66th International Motor Show Commercial Vehicles will no longer coincide with the period set aside for the erection of show stands.
At the IAA show in Frankfurt yesterday, the president of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) outlined the automotive industry’s approach to tackling CO2 from road transport, focusing on the potential of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Carlos Ghosn also presented the EU industry’s new statement on the protection of personal data.
The Frankfurt motor show has been a hotbed of announcement activity for Hankook Tire. In addition to an IAA launch of its Laufenn brand in Europe, news of original equipment tyre supply for the latest generation Audi A4 and the Volkswagen Touran, and the release of a lower rolling resistance Ventus S1 evo² and its fitment on the Mercedes-Benz C350e plug-in hybrid, the tyre maker has discussed its strategic partnership with shoe outsole company Vibram.
It appears that Hankook Tire has introduced a low rolling resistance version of its flagship Ventus S1 evo² tyre. A statement released following the company’s Frankfurt motor show press conference refers to the addition of “very low rolling resistance versions in several sizes” and states that two of these dimensions have been selected as original equipment tyres for the Mercedes-Benz C350e plug-in hybrid.
Just a generation ago the humble motor vehicle doubled as a ‘fortress of solitude’, a place the long arm of everyday responsibility couldn’t reach and a haven for those seeking a few moments’ headspace at the start or the end of a busy day. But unreachability is an increasingly scarce commodity these days. The introduction of hands-free systems has transformed the fortress into an office on four wheels for many, and now technology lurking just around the corner will bring our home-life cares to us on the road as well.
The CrossClimate, Michelin’s winter-certified summer tyre, has been on the market in Europe since May – and the French tyre maker says it is doing well. A recent Michelin newsletter reported the sale of the millionth CrossClimate tyre just two months after the range’s introduction, and word from Michelin at this week’s IAA show in Frankfurt is that 2015 sales targets for the CrossClimate will most likely be exceeded by more than 30 per cent.
Apollo Vredestein is sharing a joint IAA stand with Mansory, a German luxury car ‘tuner’. According to the companies, the stand will showcase several new and unique Mansory creations equipped with Vredestein tyres. In addition, the IAA will mark the starting point of #RockTheRoad.
More Hankook Tire news, again from the IAA in Frankfurt. The tyre maker reports that its first self-sealing tyre, the newly-developed Ventus Prime² SEALGUARD, will be supplied to Volkswagen as an original equipment tyre. The first VW to be shipped with the self-sealing tyre is the Touran, which will wear the Ventus Prime² SEALGUARD in size 215/55R17.
Although stocks won’t begin arriving at tyre dealers for another half a year, Hankook Tire launched its Laufenn tyre brand in Europe today and has given details about the five ranges it will release in our region. Laufenn’s launch at the IAA motor show comes ten months after the brand was initially introduced at SEMA in Las Vegas, and the products presented in Frankfurt differ slightly from those unveiled last November; Hankook Tire says the range was “developed especially for the European market.”
