Michelin confirms Mexico factory plans

Rumours and reports circulating since April about Michelin intention to build a new Michelin tyre factory in Mexico were confirmed on 4 July when the French company issued news of its plans to build a facility for producing high-end car and light truck tyres there. Michelin says construction of the 142,000 square metre, €450 million factory in León, Guanajuato state will begin in the second half of this year, with tyre production expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2018. An annual output of 4 to 5 million tyres is planned for the initial production phase, and the León plant will be gradually ramped up.

STARCO marks ‘historic day’ in its history

With a flip of the calendar page June became July, and STARCO and Bohnenkamp each began a new chapter in their histories. STARCO reports that the start of the new month found its offices “buzzing heavily with activity,” and the company shares that much progress has been made since the signing of a deal between the two companies in May.

Nexen Tire continues GCSI winning streak

For the seventh year in a row, Nexen Tire has topped the tyre category in Global Customer Satisfaction Competency Index (GCSI), a survey carried out by the Global Management Association in Korea under the supervision of Japan’s JMA Consultants. The tyre maker was honoured for this result at a ceremony in Beijing on 23 June, with Yang Chang-soo, president of Nexen Tire Qingdao, accepting the official award certificate on behalf of Nexen Tire.

New European Firestone website goes live

New month, new website: On 1 July, Bridgestone Europe launched a new European website for its Firestone car, truck/bus and agricultural ranges. The firestone.eu site covers 18 national markets within the region and is available in 14 languages. All expected conveniences, including tyre search by vehicle (for cars and vans) or function (for trucks and buses) can be found on the new site.

Toru Kobayashi chairman of ATG after Yokohama completes acquisition

On 1 July, Yokohama Rubber completed its acquisition of the Alliance Tire Group. The Japanese company’s new subsidiary is now headed by Toru Kobayashi, formerly assistant to Yokohama Rubber president Hikomitsu Noji, who has been appointed Alliance Tire Group chairman.

TBR imports into India soar to meet rising demand

India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association reports that imports of truck and bus radials into the country increased 57 per cent year-on-year to 280,000 units in April and May 2016. The 150,000 tyres imported in May alone accounted for almost 40 per cent of India’s replacement market demand, according to association figures.

New human resources VP at Nokian Tyres

Tarja Kaipio has been appointed Nokian Tyres’ vice-president of human resources and a member of the company’s management team. She begins in her new position on 8 August and, reporting to president and chief executive officer Ari Lehtoranta, will be responsible for human resources functions at Nokian Tyres.

Daimler patent – enhancing tyre grip with water?

Several news sources have shared news of Daimler’s filing of a patent to optimise tyre temperature, and thus grip, through the use of a high pressure water system. The patent was reportedly filed with the Intellectual Property Office in the UK and pertains to a system that is triggered by temperature sensors in a tyre.

New Hankook steer tyre provides answer to the load maximisation quandary

Cross-channel and European fleet operators running trucks fitted with 60 to 80 series tyres can find it a challenge to utilise the maximum three metre trailer inner load without exceeding the legally permissible total height of four metres. A reduced inner load means a loss in capacity and lower journey revenues. First Stop tyre retail network to become a JV in Germany

Just over a month after sharing details of growth plans for its First Stop network in the UK, Bridgestone has announced a major change in its German First Stop network. Pending approval from the relevant authorities, Pneuhage, one of the country’s largest independent tyre retailers, will acquire a 75 per cent share in a joint venture with Bridgestone Deutschland. The intention is for First Stop in Germany and its subsidiaries – retail outlets, retreading operation and partner network – to be operated by this joint venture.

Starco launches new e-commerce platform in Poland

Starco is releasing its new e-commerce platform for Polish aftermarket customers. Despite the initial aftermarket focus, the ambition is to develop functionalities which meet the needs of the original equipment manufacturers and improve the overall customer experience.

The first release will include all the shop functionalities with which customers have become acquainted from the current version, as well as a selection of new features as well. As a result of the project, Starco’s shop and website have been merged into one Polish language entity.

UK car manufacturing up a quarter in May

Hankook signs three-year global Real Madrid partnership

Hankook has signed a global partnership contract with Real Madrid CF. The contract starts from July 2016 and is set to last three seasons. By virtue of the deal, Hankook aims to add some 450 million Real Madrid fans from different global markets such as the Asian Pacific region including China, Latin America, and of course Europe. As well as perimeter advertising during all home games at the football club’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium, Hankook will have access to a range of further global marketing rights.
