The state of part-worn tyre retail in the UK looks more perilous than ever for motorists after a multi-agency investigation in Preston revealed a disturbing reality about the state of pre-used products being fitted to cars. None of the tyres inspected met the legal standards required for sale in the UK, after Lancashire County Council Trading Standards, TyreSafe, and Lancashire Constabulary coordinated an operation sampling three garages in Preston selling part-worn tyres. Inspectors said that of the 30 tyres assessed, none complied with the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994.

Auto servicing systems and aftermarket supplier Delphi suggests that many independent garages are harbouring one of the aftermarket’s “biggest misconceptions” regarding Tesla vehicles, which could be costing them 200,000-plus servicing opportunities annually. The company addressed what it called a mistaken belief that Teslas are too complex for independent garages to service and maintain at Automechanika Birmingham 2025. Luke Garratt, UK technical services manager at Delphi, said, “We wanted to show technicians that with the right knowledge and training, these vehicles are entirely serviceable and, in many ways, easier to work on than some ay think.”

Goodyear Eagle racing tyres impressed drivers with their versatility and longevity in two highly competitive classes in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Running with high performance and durability day and night, Goodyear states the Eagle tyres were consistently capable of surpassing drivers’ maximum drive time limits. The company said the technological innovation demonstrated by the tyres underlines that the LMGT3 class is the next chapter in Goodyear’s legacy in international racing. Goodyear supplied all 24 LMGT3 and 17 LMP2 cars, meaning Goodyear’s operation included 100 staff members, including tyre fitters, track support engineers for each team, administrative and marketing staff, at Le Mans. Goodyear brought 8,000 tyres to the track, with the footprint minimised through the provision of one slick and one rain specification for each class. Goodyear also flew the Blimp, continuing its 100th anniversary celebration, over the circuit, and contributed a fanzone, completing a holistic approach to the race weekend.

Goodyear has launched the Urbanmax tyre for city buses and urban transport environments. Goodyear says the Urbanmax has been engineered to handle frequent stop-and-go traffic and constant sidewalk contact. The manufacturer claims the Urbanmax offers “up to 40 per cent” longer service life potential and increased fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor. The tyre has been launched in the size 275/70R22.5.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has welcomed the unveiling of the trade agreement between the UK and the USA. The SMMT said the deal “should be recognized as a significant achievement” for UK leaders, adding that the deal would represent a “huge reassurance” for the country’s automotive sector.
Mechanics at Hedin Mercedes-Benz dealerships will strike in June and July over pay, according to Unite the union. Responsible for Mercedes repairs, MOTs and servicing across the capital, mechanics voted for industrial action after the company declined to put forward a pay offer for 2025. Mechanics at Brooklands, Bromley, and Croydon will strike on 23, 25, 27 and 30 June and 2, 4, 7, 9 and 11 July. Unite says further dates will be scheduled if the dispute is not resolved.

Yokohama will supply Advan racing tyres to more than 20 cars competing in five divisions of the 103rd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (22 June, Colorado, USA). Yokohama’s participation in this gruelling event forms part of its Advan Challenge that seeks to maximise sales of Advan tyres. Advan tyres had a significant presence last year, with five runners finishing in the top 10 in the overall results, including first-place finishes in four divisions. More broadly, Yokohama wants to increase sales of its high-value Advan performance tyre lines through its participation in all levels of motorsports around the world in line with its corporate strategy.

DJ Industrial Tyres has become the UK’s first Interfit Point dealer. The material handling sector tyre service provider will offer Interfit advanced tyre service and maintenance solutions as a result of the new collaboration. Interfit calls the partnership “a significant milestone” after it launched the dealer program in Italy. “This partnership not only expands Interfit services reach, but also marks the launch of Interfit Point dealer program in UK” said Chris Heale, sales director at Yokohama TWS, a company formed after Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama acquired Trelleborg Wheel Systems in 2023, and owner of the Interfit network.

York fleet rental firm Autohorn Fleet Services has invested £500,000 in expanding its onsite storage. The site now accommodates up to 2,500 vehicles, thanks to the 500-vehicle capacity extension, covering 10 acres in total. The firm converted waste land with a ground reinforcement system that is an environmentally friendly alternative to tarmac. The upgraded space will house its growing fleet of rental vehicles, as well as offering vehicle storage, valeting and pre-delivery inspection (PDI) services to local vehicle dealerships.

Fisichella started his ambassadorial role in 2024, and has contributed to the testing and development of high-performance Vredestein tyres, including the award-winning Ultrac Pro.
Apollo Tyres will support the 1000 Miglia classic car rally in Italy until at least 2027 when the event celebrates its centenary year. Promoting its flagship European tyre brand, Vredestein, Apollo will supply vintage tyres from its Vredestein Classic tyre range, one of the most diverse on the market, as well as receiving branding support at the 1000 Miglia and Coppa delle Alpi and the 1000 Miglia Experience Italy.
