The year 2021 is the Golden Jubilee of Point S, the multi-national tyre and car maintenance group and, to mark this milestone, the company takes a look back at 50 successful years – and a look forward too. Back in 1971, the market for tyres, car accessories and repairs was very different from what it is now, with motorists’ choice of brands limited to what the local garage had in stock at the time. Things began to change when 50 French independent garage owners came together with the aim of offering new and higher standards of service, a better choice of products and competitive prices. And so, Point S was born.
Tyre retailer and car maintenance brand Point S is launching a new version of its exclusive brand summer tyre. It says the tyre offers better efficiency, safety and longevity. The company is keeping the branding of its house brand tyre line simple; the range is branded “Point S Tyres” and will include Summer, Winter and 4 Seasons patterns. The new Point S Tyres Summer replaces its Summerstar 3+. The company says it invested in research and development to achieve a range of performance improvements, including 7 per cent better rolling resistance, 5 per cent longer mileage, and 3 per cent shorter wet braking distances. The full Point S Tyres Summer range is rated B for wet grip in the European tyre label. The tyre will be distributed in the European, African and Asian markets.
Tyre retail and car maintenance group Point S has 90 points of sale on the continent of Africa, but the network wants to double that number by 2022. Present in 41 countries around the world, Point S has recorded particularly strong performance in South Africa and is targeting development via openings in new countries. It has opened locations in Cameroon and Senegal in 2020.
Nokian Tyres has sold its Vianor US business to Oregon-based Point S member Gills Point S Tire. The transaction covers ten Vianor service centres, with all current Vianor US service centre employees will be taken on by Gills Point S Tire & Auto Service.
Following its entry into the Chinese market in October 2019, Point S has opened its first two pilot outlets. The tyre retail and car maintenance group formalised its joint venture, Point S China, with Suremoov and Harson, two major players in the Chinese garage market, and the membership of their respective networks. The formation of the JV was introduced at the end of 2019 during the Paris Equip’Auto show, and in an official ceremony in Shanghai on 25 October.
Point S is expanding in Singapore thanks to closer cooperation with BCC Automotive group, which specializes in car care. According to the company, this collaboration provides consumers with access to a network of sales outlets that can meet all their car needs including maintenance, repair and tyres.
Halfords and Mobivia have forged a joint purchasing alliance relating to own-brand products. The idea is to offer “more effective joint product development and greater innovation in both companies’ motoring and cycling ranges”.
Point S has moved into the Chinese market in cooperation with local partner Suremoov. Suremoov brings 950 franchised outlets with it into the international Point S network. The Suremoov brand has been in existence since 2004 and specialises in bodywork and car care.
Point S has decided to take their involvement in handball, a sport that shares the same values as the brand as far as team spirit is concerned, to the next level. Already heavily involved at a national and international level with the International Handball Federation, from 30 November Point S will be sponsoring the Women’s Handball World Championship in Kumumoto, Japan.
Point S Development has launched the second generation of its Point S 4 Seasons tyre range in Europe. With demand for all-season tyres increasing, and driven by the success of the first Point S 4 Seasons tyre, launched in July 2017, Point S Development wanted launch a revised version of its all-season range.
FlexFuel Energy Development UK (FFEDUK), the UK’s leading hydrogen engine cleaning company, has signed a partner agreement with Point S whereby its Hy-Carbon product will be made available to its members initially throughout the United Kingdom, and with a view to a forthcoming global agreement.
Point S has launched a new version of its private label winter tyre. The new product’s launch is part of the renewal program of the Point S branded tyre range. It follows the market introduction of the new Summerstar 3+ that took place early this year. To support this, a new European campaign has been introduced this year with the personified tyre characters: the SummerHero and the WinterHero.
Professional Pneus, an independent tyre dealer network from the South of Italy, has joined Point S Italy. Professional Pneus’ membership means Point S now has 535 points of sale in Italy, a leading figure in the country.
Gomme & Service, the leading retail network in Italy has joined Point S, the largest independent global network, effective 1 July 2018. The agreement has been structured as a mutual ownership stake between Gomme Service and Point S Italia.
Point S has expanded into the Philippines market. Connecting with the 7,641 islands that make up the Philippines is seen as a strategic move, following the operations expansion into India and Malaysia. According to the company, it will significantly increase Point S’s footprint in the Asian and global tyre landscape.
