More news from Australia, this time a tyre test win for Continental. The PremiumContact 6 has been named victor in Wheels magazine’s ten-tyre comparative evaluation.
Auto Zeitung’s 2020 summer tyre test is one of the largest it has ever published. The German motoring magazine has looked at 20 brands of size 225/50 R17 94/98 W/Y tyres in an evaluation that covers premium to budget. The cheapest of the tyres on test can be had for around 230 euros (£200) a set; the most expensive cost more than twice as much. As you’d expect, the winners’ podium was dominated by premium products priced well above the average. The fourth-placed tyre is a different story.
Continental’s sixth-generation range of award-winning car tyres provide grip and safety across a broad range of road car applications.
On 11 June, the PremiumContact 6 was launched into Singaporean shores. The PremiumContact 6 was launched in Europe in November 2016 and is designed to combines “comfort, precise steering response, maximum safety and good environmental properties”. To this end, the development engineers have come up with new compounds and a tyre design that borrows from Continental’s high-tech SportContact 6 tyre. The outcome is a product that delivers up to 15 per cent improvements in handling performance, rolling resistance, mileage and comfort compared to its predecessor.
A comparative test conducted by Swedish magazine Vi Bilägare (issue 5/2017) has resulted in another win for the new Continental PremiumContact 6, the tyre recently named victor in the Auto Bild test of 51 summer tyres. This time it was a SUV size that delivered Continental the goods; the Vi Bilägare testers fitted five brands of size 235/50 R18 to a VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI for evaluation. Testing was conducted last December Continental proving ground in Uvalde, USA.
The unworthy have already been weeded out, and now Auto Bild has given the remaining 20 tyres from the original 52 candidates in its 2017 summer test a thorough going over. The size 225/50 R17 tyres were fitted to a BMW 320d for evaluation in a range of disciplines not covered in the preliminary round, including aquaplaning, rolling resistance, mileage and noise. Victory went to the top-ranked rubber from the initial test, the Continental PremiumContact 6.
As in previous years, Auto Bild has separated the wheat from the chaff in its 2017 summer tyre test with a qualifying round. This year, the original 52 candidates were whittled down to 20 finalists through wet and dry braking tests.
The portfolio of Continental tyres available for the high performance/comfort segment has been simplified with the introduction of a single product to replace two application-specific ranges. The new tyre is the Continental PremiumContact 6; Tyres & Accessories has experienced what the range has to offer and will cover the PremiumContact 6 in our December magazine, however here are the key points for those wanting to find out more now.
