The FIA World Rallycross Championship is to postpone the introduction of electric cars until 2021. The decision has been taken to allow optimal time for all manufacturers investigating the possibility of competing to develop their plans. Manufacturers will now have until 29 March 2019 to confirm their commitment to the electric format.

Yokohama debuts in the Silverstone Classic highlights programme
A special highlights programme from this year’s Silverstone Classic Festival, which took place on 20-22 July, will be shown at 8pm this evening on ITV4. Hankook: Brands Hatch round a “good advertisement for motorsport”
With his win at Brands Hatch last weekend, Paul Di Resta closed the gap with championship leader, fellow Mercedes-Benz driver Garry Paffett, to just 29 points in the overall standings. This was Di Restas third win in Brands Hatch and the tenth of his DTM career. Gary Paffett crossed the finish line as runner-up after 40 laps of racing.

Pirelli sees technology transfer value in F1 smart tyres
Pirelli has presented new solutions and concepts as part of its Cyber Tyre development programme for more than a decade now. At last year’s Geneva Motor Show, the tyre maker introduced the Connesso system, a sensor-based solution that provides motorists with real-time tyre pressure and temperature data, as well as information about use and maintenance. Yet Cyber Tyre has only focused on road-going solutions so far – a further step for Pirelli would be to introduce its technology into Formula 1.

RallyX Nordic has a new title sponsor, and will henceforth be known as RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires. This new, multi-year arrangement with championship organiser the Scandinavian Touring Cars Corporation (STCC) continues Cooper Tires’ long-standing association with the rallycross series; the tyre maker already serves as official tyre supplier to RallyX Nordic’s Supercar and Supercar Lites categories.

DTM, Hankook returning to Brands Hatch
Between 2006 and 2013, the DTM touring car series was a regular visitor to the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, and following a four-year hiatus DTM drivers will race there once again this weekend. Instead of using the 1.2-mile Indy circuit favoured in past years, the action in 2018 will take place on the full, 2.4-mile GP circuit.

Giti Tire secures first VW Fun Cup UK podium finish at European event
GT Radial’s VW Fun Cup UK team has secured its first ever podium finish, taking third place in the European event at Circuit Zandvoort, Holland. The team was led by Giti Tire’s seasoned race and senior test engineer, Ellis Hadley and ADAC GT Masters Series competitor and Hannover R&D Centre student, André Gies, battling a 26-car field, early safety car interruptions, a non-functioning lap timer and a broken radio in their dash for the dais.

New Michelin WRC tyres debut at Rally Finland
Michelin chose the fastest round of the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship to launch its latest range of WRC gravel tyres. For the first time since 2011, the tyre maker’s partners were able to select two compounds from a choice of three options, namely the existing H4 (hard compound) version of the Michelin LTX Force tyre, along with the new S6 (soft) and M6 (medium) variants.

Conditions still don’t seem right for a Michelin return to F1
The FIA is currently seeking tenders for tyre supply to the Formula One World Championship between 2020 and 2023. As expected, talk in motorsport circles has returned to the possibility of Michelin throwing its hat into the ring. The French tyre maker is open to the prospect of acting as sole tyre supplier, as requested by the FIA tender, provided that “a technical challenge was involved.” Yet other FIA conditions continue to place stumbling blocks in the way of a Michelin return.
