As reported yesterday, The Reifen show looks set to find a new home in Cologne from 2018 onwards. The reason local publication the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung gave for this change of location after half a century in the German city of Essen was the local referendum on renovation plans for the Messe Essen site – 50.4 per cent of residents voted against the €120 million investment to modernise the exhibition facility. However our German sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung has learned that the move to Cologne would have occurred no matter what the referendum’s outcome was.

Ford Retail’s UK parts division, @first Parts, has reported an annual turnover of over £100 million in 2013, the first time since its launch in 2004. According to the company, overall parts sales saw an increase of 14 per cent year-on-year, whist the Trade, Bodyshop and Ford Dealers divisions reported an annual growth of 13 per cent, 22 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
In summer 2013, Yokohama Rubber began building a passenger car tyre factory in China’s Jiangsu Province, the company shared today. The new plant is being erected adjacent to a truck and bus tyre factory operated by Chinese subsidiary Suzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd., and is expected to begin production in April 2014. Production capacity will grow incrementally until it reaches six million tyres per annum by the end of 2017. Total investment in the plant will amount to approximately ¥26.5 billion (£153.7 million).
Maxxis says its MAS2 successor, the Victra Sport VS01, addresses the demands of high performance vehicle drivers, and opines it may prove to be one of its most significant product launches in years.
The entire VS01 range of summer tyres comes with a new asymmetric tread pattern and rim protector. Maxxis says sport performance is delivered through the tyre’s high-strength steel belts and high rigidity bead filler, while driver comfort has been aided by the use of finite element analysis to keep noise to a minimum.
French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and Minister of Industrial Renewal Arnaud Montebourg have welcomed the end of the long-term standoff over Goodyear’s Amiens Nord factory. In a statement issued on 22 January, Montebourg expresses confidence that the signing of a deal between Goodyear management and representatives of the CGT (Confédération générale du travail or General Confederation of Labour) union will end the plant’s occupation and seven years of tension.
Goodyear has made its new Fuelmax truck tyre available on European markets, including a steer size that the manufacturer believes to be the first with an A-grade for fuel efficiency on the EU tyre label. Bridgestone has revealed its plan to increase the prominence of its Firestone brand in the UK passenger car tyre market during summer 2014. The manufacturer says its marketing drive will link the Firestone badge explicitly to its lengthy history in motorsport, and Bridgestone is hoping that this renewed effort will put its mid-range brand in a position to offer a compelling proposition to motorists and dealers alongside Bridgestone’s premium offering. Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has appointed Stephen Ray as its new financial director. He replaces Oliver Burns who worked at the company for six years. Before moving to Dunlop, Stephen Ray spent 13 years at LINPAC Group, a producer of plastic packaging for the retail, catering, manufacturing, packing and food sectors.
North Yorkshire Police confirm that a 51-year old man has been arrested as part of the investigation into the fire that began at Newgen Recycling in Sherburn-in-Elmet on 16 January. Police describe the man as ‘local’ and say he has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
A famous saying posits that nothing is certain except for death and taxes, but Nokian Tyres may argue that taxes and then further taxes are more certain. Following on from the reassessment and €26.9 million bill received in December for the 2007 financial year, Nokian Tyres announced on 21 January that Finland’s Tax Administration has also reassessed Nokian’s tax for the years 2008 to 2010. According to this reassessment, the tyre maker must pay an extra €73.3 million tax and interest (€51.0 million of which is tax) for these three years. Payment must be made in February 2014.
