AFCAR formed to champion independent automotive aftermarket rights

A coalition of trade associations (including the NTDA) and commercial organisations (including Halfords and Kwik Fit) has been formed to lobby the UK government to uphold “the rights of the independent aftermarket and consumers in the post-Brexit era.” The UK Alliance for the Freedom of Car Repair (AFCAR), which derives its name from the European group of the same name, will primarily lobby on the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations (MV-BER), Vehicle Type Approval (including access to Repair & Maintenance Information) and Cybersecurity.

Roads minister announces ‘evidence review’ of red lights for recovery operators

In a significant win for the roadside rescue and recovery industry, Roads Minister Michael Ellis MP today announced that the Department for Transport would be reviewing the evidence base for the benefits of recovery operators being permitted to use red flashing warning beacons, instead of the amber warning beacons current legislation allows. The announcement occurred during a Westminster Hall debate led by Tracey Crouch MP.

Councils expected to introduce £1,000-a-year workplace parking levies

Up to 10 local authorities could be planning to introduce workplace charging levies, which could cost employees up to £1,000 per year to park at work. According to The AA, Hounslow Council is proposing to introduce a charge between £500 and £1,000 and nine other councils are considering similar measures. The schemes are designed to reduce inner-city emissions and improve air quality by discouraging drivers from using their car to get to work.

‘Filling in potholes no substitute for modernising roads’ – LeasePlan

A report from the AA shows that more than three-quarters (76 per cent) of UK drivers want all potholes filled within a week and 18 per cent want potholes to be filled within 24 hours of them appearing. LeasePlan UK’s managing director, Matt Dyer, has reacted to the story, outlining that the government needs to provide a better connected and dynamic infrastructure that suits both the needs of people and businesses.

Driving Test changes meet with general approval

Changes to the driving test will help save lives and improve road safety, said transport minister Andrew Jones. Learner drivers will need to pass a modern test that will include new manoeuvres and a longer independent driving section to make sure drivers have the skills, knowledge and confidence to drive on their own. The changes will also include a section where drivers use satellite navigation to find their way.

AA Garage Guide, the online search and booking site, has enlisted the help of the AA’s expert patrols to recommend the best local garages in their area. Each of the nearly 4,000 garages included on the Garage Guide’s site must adhere to its strict listing criteria. Patrol suggestions will be highlighted on the Garage Guide website as a ‘Patrol Pick’ so that members can see which selections they suggest. The AA says this will help to make sure that workshops get the recognition and the business that they deserve.

LeasePlan UK debunks motorway myths

This year has seen Highways England roll out smart motorways as a part of its ambition to reduce congestion and improve journey times in the UK. But, with that, Transport Minister Chris Grayling gave the go-ahead to remove 32 miles of hard shoulder on the M4, with 30 schemes proposed to permanently convert the hard shoulder into a traffic lane on around 300 miles of motorway.

AA Tyres grows 40%, firm expands into West Country

AA Tyres, the AA’s mobile tyre fitting service, has grown its fleet of vans by 40 per cent in response to escalating demand. The ten new Volkswagen Crafter vans will allow AA Tyres to push into the West Country, where the demand for mobile tyre fitting in Bristol, Bath and the surrounding areas is said to have surged. The AA’s mobile tyre fitting service is currently available between London, Birmingham and Manchester and the surrounding regions.
