Global retreading supplier Vipal Rubber was one of 500 exhibitors in the truck fleet sector taking part in the Great American Trucking Show between 25 and 27 August in Dallas, Texas, USA. Representing Vipal were Leonardo Oliveira, Vipal Rubber’s technical and sales representative, and Amaramh Velazquez, Vipal’s sales representative in the Western United States. Vipal introduced tyres retreaded by its customer Panhandle Tire & Rubber, from Amarillo TX with its VT170 ECO and VL130 ECO treads, which focus on wet grip and wear resistance respectively.
Three Arisun and Westlake brand tyres, which are manufactured by Zhongce Rubber Group Co., Ltd. (ZC Rubber) in China, recently achieved Smartway fuel efficiency accreditation from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Westlake AT566 long haul tyre, Arisun AT570 long haul tyre, Arisun AD778 regional driver tyre all qualified of the low rolling resistance standard.
Vipal Rubber says it invests in technology and in the development of products that save money while minimising their environmental impact, and the latest Vipal release to arise from this focus is the VT170 ECO. The retreading materials producer reports that this freight haulage tread was recently verified by the SmartWay Transport programme in the USA. Brazil’s Vipal Rubber reports that its VL130 ECO pre-cured tread has become the company’s first product to be approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership. As expected from a SmartWay approved tyre, the tread’s design and compound aims to maximise fuel efficiency; Vipal reports that the trailer axle tread has a low bearing resistance that generates less heat, thus ensuring less casing fatigue and helping to improve retreadability.
While the North American tyre market struggled to create demand for additional volume in 2013, Bill Sweatman, president of Marangoni Tread North America, announced the company managed to achieve a 70,000 unit sales increase for the year. “Growing faster than the market is a key indicator that we continue to collectively provide our customers with best-in-class products, service, support and the best network of independent dealers in the industry,” he said.

According to a company statement, this means the product meets the requirements of the SmartWay Technology programme that verifies low rolling resistance retreaded tyres which help reduce truck fuel consumption by at least 3%, according to the EPA. This programme is compliant with California Air Resources Board (CARB) as well.
Bridgestone Americas has launched a new premium drive radial in North America, the M760 Ecopia. The tyre is primarily designed for use in on-highway, long-haul and regional service. In the US, Bridgestone recently submitted four Bandag retread products to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for SmartWay verification. Upon approval, Bridgestone will offer a total of seven SmartWay verified retreads following a number earlier approvals. Three Bandag retread products – the B710 FuelTech, B197 FuelTech, and B135 FuelTech – are already on the agency’s list of low rolling resistance retreads.
Two Marangoni Ringtread Energeco products, the drive tyre RDA-E and trailer tyre RTA-E, have been approved by the SmartWay programme in the US. Tire Review reports that this month’s verification of the RDA-E, with a tread depth of 19.84mm (25/32-inch), follows the November 2012 approval of the RTA-E, with a tread depth of 9.53mm (12/32-inch).
