BM Catalysts has increased its vehicle parc coverage with 56 new part numbers that accommodates 1,056 fitments – potential coverage for 25.6 million vehicles. The expansion includes 33 Euro 6-part numbers, which now cover 770 fitments.
Drivers are being urged to be vigilant after a huge rise in the number of catalytic converters being stolen from cars. Police in London say the number of thefts in the first six months of 2019 was 2,894, a 73 per cent increase on the 1,674 stolen in the whole of 2018. In Cambridgeshire, there were 61 reported thefts between June 20 and August 14, with 44 of these from Honda Jazz, Toyota Prius or Toyota Auris cars.

UK exhaust manufacturer Klarius has posted a series of web training videos to YouTube, explaining the nuances of exhaust design, and such necessities to engines as back pressure. Since back pressure is controlled by the design of the entire exhaust system – including diameter, shape and length of the exhaust and any baffles present in the muffler – Klarius states that detailed design and testing is a necessity. The company manufactures more than two million exhaust systems every year in the UK.
Klarius’ R&D department has had a busy start to 2015, with “more than 100” new part numbers to be introduced by the end of March. The new list of parts covers over 170 applications, including new exhaust system components, CATs, DPFs and accessories. Klarius stated that it has responded to customer requests for replacement emission control parts new to the company’s range.
The New Year has begun at Klarius with the reintroduction of a large portion of the company’s extensive catalytic converter range. The list of part numbers covers around 70 per cent of the company’s most popular products, all manufactured in the UK and fully type-approved. The latest product references are now live on the Klarius electronic catalogue and various sourcing platforms such as TecDoc.

Catalytic convertor (CAT), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and exhaust theft protection specialist Catloc has confirmed Halfords Autocentres as its new national fitting partner. Catloc says CAT, DPF and exhaust theft is on the increase in the UK, and the company sought a partner that would give potential customers easy access to its solutions and fitment of these; for this, it wanted to partner with a sizable and experienced national chain, and Catloc says the presence of more than 300 outlets in the UK made Halfords Autocentres the “obvious choice”.

A British scientist has designed a new type of catalytic converter that could cut fuel consumption and manufacturing costs. Dr Benjamin Kingsbury, a scientist from Imperial College London, suggests that the new prototype could reduce fuel consumption in a standard vehicle by up to three per cent. Furthermore the new design uses up to 80 per cent less rare metal, a development that could significantly reduce costs for vehicle manufacturers. Catalytic converters are expensive to manufacture because they use precious metals such as platinum to eliminate emissions. These metals currently account for up to 60 to 70 per cent of the cost of the component.
2006 has seen ArvinMeritor Light Vehicle Aftermarket embark on a major new parts development programme. During the first quarter of the year 55 exhaust and 30 catalytic converter references were added to an already market leading range, providing a further 100 model applications. With plans in place to accelerate the development programme, by year end the company aim to have added a total of 400 new references.
(Akron/Tire Review) Tenneco Inc. said it will introduce 575 additional part numbers to its Walker and DynoMax aftermarket exhaust system lines in April, expanding coverage for domestic and import vehicles.
The new SKUs cover cat-back exhaust systems to direct-fit catalytic converters and premium muffler assemblies, and will give Tenneco 92 per cent coverage of the North American car population, the company said.
Want a novel way of beating sky-high pump prices and fuel strikes? A German inventor claims he has developed a way to make cheap diesel fuel out of dead cats. Dr Christian Koch, 55, from Kleinhartmannsdorf, said his method uses old tyres, weeds and animal corpses.
The ingredients are heated up to 300 Celsius to filter out hydrocarbons which are then turned into diesel by, and this is no joke, using a catalytic converter. Dr Koch told online new sources the resulting “high quality bio-diesel” costs just 15 pence per litre. The cadaver of a fully-grown cat can produce as much as 2.5 litres of fuel – meaning around 20 cats are needed for a full tank, he explained.
“I tank my car with my own diesel mixture and have driven it for 105,000 miles without any problems,” Dr Koch told Germany’s Bild newspaper.
