Latin American & Caribberan Tyre Expo 2014

More than 3,000 visitors came in the summer of 2012 to the recent Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo in Panama and made the only Latin American tire so fair a success. According to the organizers now, there is also a Tyre Expo for the next event: You will be taking place in Atlapa Convention Center in Panama, from the 24th to 27 July 2013.

Redefining ‘tyre wear’ – new Goodyear clothing range launched

A brand new range of ‘vintage’ t-shirts and sweatshirts with Goodyear branding has gone on sale at Pull&Bear retail outlets worldwide and online, as part of the Goodyear Vintage fashion programme. As part of a deal brokered between IMG Licensing and the Goodyear Company, the clothing will be sold at Pull&Bear stores in 62 countries around the world and on their e-commerce website alongside the existing local Goodyear range of clothing.

BYD’s Qin is China’s best-selling electric car

BYD’s second-generation dual-mode, plug-in high performance hybrid electric saloon car, the Qin, has set a second record month of sales in February. Trends in March now make it ‘China’s Best-Selling Electric Vehicle’ according to China’s National Passenger Car Association. The Qin, in renamed form, is expected to spearhead BYD sales in the European consumer market in the coming years.

Nexen distances itself from Czech Republic plant rumours

Nexen Tire will soon make a decision on where to build its new plant in Eastern Europe, and several international news reports point to the Korean tyre maker choosing the Czech Republic. Yet Nexen denies having selected the country, or indeed any particular location, as its preferred site. Responding to news published by Czech News Agency and media questioning, an unnamed company official made clear what Nexen has already decided upon – and what it hasn’t.

Paraguay presidential meeting a prelude to Pirelli presence

Pirelli intends to establish an office in Paraguay, and may use this as a starting point for establishing a greater presence within the country. The official website of the President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, reports that the head of state met with Pirelli Latin America executive president Paolo Dal Pino at the Government Palace in Asunción yesterday. Dal Pino was accompanied by Italy’s ambassador to Paraguay, Antonella Cavallari.

TGI announces trio of sales team appointments

Florida, US-based wholesaler Tire Group International has announced two new appointments within its international sales team and one in its domestic sales team. The wholesaler’s international team welcomes Nelson Garces and Luis Betancur, while Perry May joins TGI’s domestic sales team in the capacity of manager for the off-highway division.

Vredestein to start new year with agri production boost

To accommodate growing demand for all types of agricultural tyres from professional end-users, Apollo Vredestein B.V. is investing heavily to expand production capacity for these products. The production schedule and unit production at the company’s Enschede plant in The Netherlands will thus increase by 50 per cent from January 2014. This augmentation, which was first announced in August 2012, has already decreased delivery times, and thanks to improved production capacities the development of new tyres is progressing more rapidly than planned.

Mesnac opening US research centre

International News

A new Mesnac facility being set up in the US will aid the company in its goal of developing equipment, processes and systems that are more closely aligned to the needs of its customers in North and Latin America. The Chinese tyre and rubber industry supplier is locating this new Research and TechnicalCenter in Akron, Ohio and says the facility will be an extension of its recently-established Research Institute in Qingdao. The company already runs a similar centre in Slovakia to support its European customer base.

Pirelli unveils Q3 results, introduces new Industrial Plan

At yesterday’s presentation of its 2013-2017 Industrial Plan in London, Pirelli & C. SpA highlighted its performance since the presentation of its previous Industrial Plan in 2011 (which covered 2011-2015) and stated its aims for the current period. The event followed the release of the company’s third quarter figures on 5 November. The headline figures for the third quarter are net sales of €1.52 billion (down 2.19 per cent year-on-year, operating income of €201.0 million (up 2.87 per cent), EBIT margin of 13.2 per cent (12.6 per cent in Q2 2012) and net income up 27.36 per cent to €108.0 million.

New director general at Yokohama Tire Mexico

Career Tracks

Yokohama Tire Mexico (YTMX), a subsidiary of Yokohama Tire Corporation, has announced the hiring of Humberto Gomez as its new director general. In this role, Gomez is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Queretaro, Mexico-based company. The position was created to meet the growing Mexican-market demand for consumer, commercial and off-the-road tyres.

TGI given free trade status

International News

Miami-based US tyre wholesaler Tire Group International reports that it was granted ‘Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) 281-4’ status on 9 September. This designation will give TGI the ability to defer, reduce and even eliminate customs duties on products brought into its US distribution centre for re-export.
