While most tyre manufacturers are evolving their approach to building ranges of electric vehicle tyres, with specialism not always the preferred route, a small number of tyre-makers were quick off the mark with new product lines. Korean manufacturer Kumho was one of the small number to bring an all-new product to the electric vehicle replacement tyre market, entering the burgeoning segment in 2016 with the Wattrun VS31. The tyre garnered several accolades for pioneering design work, including both the prestigious German Red Dot Design Award and American Green Good Design award. Now Kumho’s strategy is to bring its EV line more directly into alignment with its existing passenger car tyre brands; the Wattrun VS31 pattern has now been superseded by the Ecsta PS71 EV, the company’s next generation electric vehicle tyre.
Kumho’s long-standing relationship with Volkswagen has continued with the fitment of Kumho’s ecowing ES31 pattern on its 2020 Polo model. Specially tailored for the car, the 185/65R15 tyre is Kumho’s first ultra-low rolling resistance version of the ES31, with A-grade fuel efficiency and wet grip on the EU label. The 2001 Polo was Kumho’s first major European motor manufacturer OE contract.
The latest eco-friendly offering from Kumho is the Ecowing ES31. This successor to the KH27 is now available in a total of 46 sizes for 14- to 17-inch rim diameters, and around 70 percent of these carry an EU label grade of ‘B’ for rolling resistance. The sizes include all key fitments for bestselling small and medium-sized hatchbacks and saloons such as the VW Polo and Golf, Fiat 500, Audi A1, A2, A3 and A4, BMW 1 and 2 Series, Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio.
Kumho has added the new BMW 5 Series to its portfolio of OEM supply deals. The tyre manufacturer’s Ecsta PS91 super sports tyre in size 245/45R18 XL 100Y is now being delivered to the German marque’s Dingolfing plant in Bavaria.
A new Kumho tyre designed with low rolling resistance and fuel savings in mind has been released in the UK. The Kumho Ecowing ES31 is available in 38 sizes, and Kumho Tyre UK says almost 70 per cent of these sizes carry an EU tyre label rating of ‘B’ for fuel efficiency – this is, it adds, – an “impressively high margin by any standard.”
Kumho has introduced its latest eco tyre, the Ecowing ES31, to the UK market, joining its high performance Ecsta range. The new tyre will gradually replace the established KH27, and is available initially in a total of 38 14 to 17 inch sizes, almost 70 percent of which carry a B label grade for rolling resistance. The sizes including all the key fitments for such best-selling small and medium-sized hatchbacks and saloons as the VW Polo and Golf, Fiat 500, Audi A1, A2, A3 and A4, BMW 1 and 2 Series, Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio.
Kumho made Reifen 2016 the occasion of its new UHP winter tyre’s world premiere, in addition to displaying its role in a project to optimise the fuel efficiency of existing diesel technology. The company’s 300sqm stand in Hall 3 also featured the company’s current portfolio of products for a wide variety of tyre segments, including electric and hybrid vehicles.
Supported by the manufacturer’s increased original equipment business and its motorsport activities, Kumho’s car tyre range has been reviewed well in the latest round of magazine testing, Its latest high performance product, the Ecsta HS51, was awarded the ‘Recommended’ rating by the highly-regarded German consumer magazine, ACE Lenkrad, for example.
Kumho staged a UK launch for its updated product range at Rockingham Motor Speedway. Dubbed the ‘Kumho Experience’, the manufacturer’s UK marketing director John Thrupp introduced the day long event, which allowed Kumho’s national network of dealers and media guests to sample the performance characteristics of such tyres as the Solus HS51 premium tyre, which became available in the last quarter of 2013.
