Nordic Tyres to profile Nokian PCR ranges at Brityrex International 2014
Making its debut at the British tyre industry show Brityrex on 7-9 October 2014, Nordic Tyres has announced that it will showcase Nokian Tyres’ PCR and 4x4 ranges. The Lockerbie based company is the sole UK distributor of the Finnish manufacturer’s products, including its forestry, agricultural and industrial tyre ranges. The exhibition will take place at EventCity, Manchester.

Carlisle based tyre brand Dmack has been awarded a place in the final of the Cathay Pacific China Business Awards. Local news source North West Evening Mail reports that the company is shortlisted in the Rising Star category. The awards recognise UK and Irish businesses demonstrating existing positive returns and ongoing plans for future investment in China and Hong Kong, with the Rising Star award given to those opening Chinese operations in the last five years.

Michelin has launched a new training academy that it says promises to transform tyre fitters in the UK and Ireland into the “next generation of expert technicians.” Ten fitters from the Michelin Certified Centre (MCC) network have already been selected to take part in the first Michelin Professionals Academy course, a programme of training that includes a balance of theoretical and practical learning.

At a meeting on 6 May, members of the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority unanimously voted to support the tyre aging motion that has arisen from the campaign begun by Liverpool woman Frances Molloy following the 2012 death of her son in a coach crash. The motion, titled Coach Safety & Prevention of Road Traffic Accidents, calls for an age limit of six years to be placed on tyres fitted to coaches.

Bridgestone’s stand at the 2014 edition of the CV Show reflected the prevailing opinion that this year showed an upturn in attendance. The tyre manufacturer, exhibiting its Total Tyre Life, Total Tyre Services and Total Tyre Systems tyre management components, said it saw a 42 per cent increase in visitor numbers on the previous year’s event. Bridgestone said that it hoped to convert the additional exposure of its Total Tyre Care package into increased business.

Coach and bus operator New Adventure Travel has taken up a predominantly Michelin tyre policy following trials that suggested it could double the lifespan of its existing tyres. The Cardiff-based firm has moved to fitting predominantly 245/70 R 19.5 and 265/70 R19.5 Michelin XZE2+ tyres on its service buses and 315/80 R 22.5 X MultiWay 3D XZEs on its coaches.

Further to the Heads of Agreement signed last October, Kumho Tyre (UK) and Micheldever Tyre Services have announced their agreement to a new three-year contract with immediate effect. The contract confirms that MTS will continue to support and grow the existing Kumho Ecsta Performance Centre (EPC) network of independent retailers. In turn, Kumho will build and serve a complementary network of EPCs via its new warehouse facility in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. Both networks will operate on a common platform based on the long-standing approach.

Bridgestone has renewed its largest fleet contract for a further five years. Announced at the CV Show, the deal with Ryder, the UK’s leading provider of commercial vehicle rental, contract hire and maintenance solutions, represents a multi-million pound deal covering more than 24,500 trucks and trailers. Bridgestone’s 24-hour tyre management service network Truck Point was cited as a major factor behind Ryder’s decision to opt for the brand.

While bearing a new name – what the industry has long known as the TAFF Awards has been rebranded as the Tyre Industry Awards – the dinner remains the UK industry’s main social event. Today, Pirelli announced it will sponsor the ‘Tyre Retail Centre of the Year’ award category. The award will be handed out at the annual NTDA dinner and prize-giving ceremony in Manchester on 8 October.

Bridgestone Europe and Cam International have shared details of a new tablet based work management system designed to reduce back-office issues and improve data entry in the commercial vehicle tyre sector. Speaking at a fringe meeting during the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham on 29 April, Bridgestone Europes Neil Purves (senior manager, automated inspection and systems development commercial product) and Cams Steve Daly explained that the two companies have been in talks since the last CV Show and have now made a Europe-wide cooperation agreement culminating in the development of the projects software.

Michelin is introducing a new 24/7 breakdown service for truck, bus and coach operators. The Michelin ONCall service, which uses audited and approved Michelin Certified Centres to provide coverage across the UK and Republic of Ireland, was officially launched at the CV Show today. It draws upon the combined strength of all independent Michelin Truck Professional (MTP) dealers and ATS Euromaster centres to offer a rapid-response network of more than 300 commercial vehicle-ready service points.

As the May issue of Tyres & Accessories went to press, the government shared details of how its Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) is going to spend its £500 million funding allowance. For its part, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) duly welcomed the half a billion pound funding boost for low emission vehicles, characterising the move as part of a wider campaign to make the UK “a leader in the development and take-up of low emission vehicles”. Clearly this is on the political and commercial agendas (at least as far as the automotive manufacturers are concerned), but what does this all mean for the tyre business in general? And, with this year’s Tyre Retail feature published from page 26 of this issue, what does this mean for garages and tyre retail in particular?

The latest research suggests that as many as 5.6 million part worn tyres have been sold in the UK each year since 2009. The ICM poll, which was commissioned by insurance firm Liverpool Victoria (otherwise known as LV) and published on 10 April found that 1.5 million motorists have bought “sub-standard second hand tyres” since 2009 and that a total of 23 million part worns have been sold in the UK since then.
