Versarien wins £1.95 million graphene research development agreement

Versarien plc, which makes nanocompounds for tyre applications amongst other things, is was awarded a product development funding from the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), a part of the Ministry of Defence at the end of November 2020.

US military not swayed by Trump’s call for Goodyear boycott

In April 2019 the US Department of Defense awarded Goodyear a $38 million contract via its Defense Logisitics Agency. This three-year deal for the delivery of aircraft tyres is the most recent in a long supply relationship between the US tyre maker and the country’s military. This relationship continues, despite President Trump’s call for a boycott of Goodyear.

Tyre to track and back again – in 2 seconds

A team from Carnegie Mellon University National Robotics Engineering Center (CMU NREC) in the USA has demonstrated shape-shifting wheel-track mechanisms that transition from a round wheel to a triangular track and back again while the vehicle is on the move. This Reconfigurable Wheel-Track (RWT) system can change from wheel to track and back again within just two seconds.

Goodyear sponsors Pro Football Hall of Fame: video

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced its sponsorship of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The company has a long association with American Football, including the Goodyear Blimp’s aerial television coverage, which has run for more than 60 years. The Hall of Fame is located, like Goodyear’s headquarters, in Ohio, where the National Football League was founded. Hundreds of thousands of fans around the world visit the campus in Canton, where a $500 million Hall of Fame village is currently under development.

Goodyear receives Freedom Award at the Pentagon

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was formally presented with the 2016 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award on 26 August during a ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The Freedom Award was given to 15 companies selected from more than 2,400 nominations an acknowledges.

Goodyear is the largest producer of military tyres in the US, but its connection with the country’s armed forces goes beyond tyre supply. G.I. Jobs magazine – a publication that aims to simply the transition from the military to a successful civilian career – has again named Goodyear Tire & Rubber a Top 100 Military Friendly Employer. This designation recognises the company’s efforts to hire and support veteran employees.

Goodyear reaches military employment target early, makes new pledge

Two years ago, Goodyear Tire & Rubber said it would hire 1,000 United States ex-military personnel over the coming three years. Today, the company announced it surpassed this goal more than a year early, and has pledged to hire an additional 1,000 veterans. The company has also formed an employee veterans association, which is devoted to supporting the transition to civilian life and enabling internal networking opportunities.

Michelin unveils anti-landmine tyre, ‘pushing back limits of mobility’

Michelin military tyre SOUVIM II land mine clearing system

Michelin has launched a new military tyre product, designed to help clear safe pathways through areas studded with land mines. The manufacturer worked with the French military and defence systems manufacturer MBDA in the development of the tyre. Michelin explained that the company has a duty to stretch the limits of its traditional role as a tyre supplier to provide all-inclusive mobility support. Michelin also announced that it has reworked its range of all-terrain truck mobility solutions, with its X-Force tyres available in four different tread designs, including the new fuel-efficient XZL2 version.

Dana unveils Spicer central tyre inflation system for military and vocational applications

Dana Holding Corporation has launched new technology to support its Spicer central tyre inflation system (CTIS). The new technology is designed to optimize the performance of lower flow CTIS applications for smaller government defence and “vocational” vehicles with a new mechatronic control unit (MCU) option. According to the company, this technology identifies and reacts to tyre inflation issues more effectively by enabling individual wheel control. The MCU is an integrated unit that includes electronic, computer, and mechanical engineering with the intention of delivering improved reliability, a smaller footprint, reduced weight, and less wiring complexity.

Tyre manufacturer Petlas Tire Corporation has been listed amongst the top 100 export businesses in the growing Turkish economy. According to the company, Petlas has been exporting to more than 110 countries from all over the world and thereby increasing its market share. The goal is now to be in the top 50.

Goodyear appoints ex-CIA man to board

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has appointed Michael J. Morell, a retired deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency to its board of directors. The election brings the size of Goodyear’s board to 13 members.

Morell served as deputy director of the CIA from May 2010 to August 2013. A career officer, he held a variety of senior leadership positions with the agency, including serving as acting director twice, director of intelligence and executive director. He also served as a deputy director at the National Counterterrorism Center.

Petlas expands TBR line

Petlas Tyres has added four sizes to its Petlas and Starmaxx brand truck and bus radial tyres. The additions are scheduled to be released by October 2013. According to the company, Petlas engineers started to develop the firm’s TBR tyre program in the first quarter of 2012. They new products are reportedly designed and produced with low rolling resistance, good fuel efficiency, durability and long life in mind.
