
Giti’s European R&D centre ready for growing OE business
It’s been a year since Tyres & Accessories first met the recently-appointed head of Giti Tire’s new R&D Centre Europe. At the time, R&D director Stefan Fischer shared the tyre maker’s plans and showed off the still largely-empty premises where specialists would soon be hard at work. A lot has changed in 12 months: Upon returning to the Hannover, Germany-based facility, we saw it was well and truly up and running and, in the important area of original equipment development, even further established than originally planned.

Treadsetters wins best stand award at Brityrex 2014
Treadsetters (Part of the TIA Group) won the best stand award at this years Brityrex 2014 Show. Having gone with the primary objective of promoting the companys high tyre and wheel brands, winning the award was described as an “unexpected bonus”.

Chicago Pneumatic to debut cordless range at SEMA
Chicago Pneumatic has announced plans to premier new range of cordless tools for the vehicle service industry at SEMA 2014. Visitors to the booth will be able to try the tools and see first-hand just how powerful and easy to use they are. The company is also previewing its workshop equipment range, which will be available in 2015, as well as showcasing new tools in its pneumatic range of impact wrenches.

Netherlands-based Techno Marketing Group (TMG) has moved to new premises. Earlier this year TMG relocated its base and associated distribution centre to a new all purpose site in Roosendaal. According to the company, the new site incorporates a carefully planned and spacious office area with an adjacent product showroom specially designed to also act as a customer training centre.

European launch for ‘Z’ tyre range
A few months ago the company behind the Infinity, Westlake and Linglong brands in our region unveiled its new corporate identity and name, Zenises. It also previewed an upcoming tyre brand, known simply as ‘Z’. The new brand was officially launched yesterday, and Zenises says it “stands apart from the crowded tyre market by delivering an unbeatable combination of performance, visual appeal and value for money.”

A new study carried out by ICM Research for Kwik Fit suggests that 22 per cent of British drivers have purchased part-worn tyres for their car at some stage and nine per cent – a figure that represents close to three million drivers – have done so in the past year. However the survey of 2,561 adults in the UK found that only 17 per cent of respondents would consider buying used tyres in the future, with many saying they wouldn’t do so as they have experienced problems as a result of opting for used rubber.

Trelleborg, Tractor Girl and Massey Fergusson prepare for South Pole expedition
Most farmers are unlikely to ever operate their tractors in Antarctic conditions, but should the need arise it’s reassuring to know they can. Massey Ferguson is heading to the South Pole next month with Manon Ossevoort – the Dutch woman popularly known as ‘The Tractor Girl’ – who will drive a MF 5600 tractor to the bottom of the world. Trelleborg has been selected as official partner for the 1,460 mile/2,350 kilometre ‘Antarctica2’ expedition that sets off on 21 November, and has developed a special multi-purpose tyre and wheel set for the journey.

Kumho Tyre partners with R3 for safer UK roads
Driver training school R3 (Road Risk Reduction) has selected Kumho Tyre UK as a new commercial partner. The arrangement will see Kumho Tyre UK and the Rockingham Motor Speedway-based outfit work together towards giving British drivers a solid foundation in both attitude and skill. Kumho will equip all R3 cars with its Ecowing ES01 KH27, and on top of this will send all Kumho Tyre UK staff on a bespoke training course with R3 to ensure safe and economical driving.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Companys global headquarters building in Akron has earned a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating from the US Green Building Council. At 639,000 square feet, it is among the largest LEED Gold certified buildings in Ohio. The LEED green building program ensures buildings conserve energy, water and other resources and are safer and healthier for occupants. Gold certification indicates Goodyears high level of investment in best-in-class building strategies and practices.

Shanghai-based contract tyre manufacturer SD-International recently reinforced its European sales team with the appointment of Andy Baron as sales manager (Northern Europe). Both this and the introduction of the company’s new Toledo range took place during October’s Britytrex exhibition in Manchester.

On 5 October transport authorities in New Zealand introduced the EnergyWise approval mark to help identify fuel efficient tyres and to help encourage consumers to ask for Energywise-approved tyres. The mark is also designed to give reassurance about the performance of the wet braking performance of tyres.

DriveRight to offer TPMS CAD analysis soon
Tyre, wheel and automotive data firm DriveRight reports that it will soon be offering TPMS CAD analysis. In a recent newsletter the company reports that it has a number of different CAD drawings of OE and AM tyre pressure monitoring sensors from a variety of manufacturers (including Alligator, Schrader, Huf and VDO/Continental).

Retooling leads to UK car production dip, but YTD figures at 6-year high
Although slightly fewer cars were manufactured in the UK last month than in September 2013, production in the first nine months of 2014 was the highest in six years. Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, commented that “it is testament to the strength of the automotive industry that it continues to break records – yielding the best year-to-date performance for six years and comfortably surpassing one million units.” The reason for the “slight dip” in output in September was, he added, that some plants undertook retooling for new models; this investment, he added, will help increase future production volumes.

Sweden’s Trelleborg AB has reported a 5.8 per cent increase in net sales in the third quarter of 2013, with acquired business contributing some two per cent towards this result. Company president and CEO Peter Nilsson commented that Trelleborg “achieved these healthy earnings despite weaker market trends for several market segments and thus a slight fall-off in organic growth.”
