Wilson steps down as RMA director
David Wilson has stepped down from his role as Director of the UK’s Retread Manufacturers Association, a role he has filled since January 2005. He will now be taking the opportunity to focus on the management of his publishing interests including Retreading Business, Tyre & Rubber Recycling and Commercial Tyre Business.

At a celebration marking 50 years in the business in early June, the Geretsberg, Austria-based company looked back upon a “colourful and varied history.” It’s a history that wouldn’t have been such a successful one had the company not enjoyed the continued and full support of founding and owner family Schmidt and the entire workforce at the Geretsberg site. Fifty years of Kraiburg Austria – it is a success story with a bright future, and at the company’s golden jubilee celebration this was shared with around 100 political, business, industry and media representatives.

The Dutch retreader specialises in the off-road segment and offers tyre repair, pre-cure retreading and, increasingly, mould cure retreading. General manager Ursula Abels told Tyres & Accessories during Reifen 2014 that the mould cure retreading operation has become OBO’s most significant business.

Roughly 18 months after paying US$89.2 million for the then £100 million a year turnover company, Hexpol reports that the acquisition has strengthened its operations.

Five decades ago Kraiburg started production at its Geretsberg site with just eight employees. The customs barriers between Germany and Austria were the reason why the directors of the Kraiburg family business with its headquarters in Waldkraiburg in Bavaria decided to go across the border. After two decades of producing in Germany they purchased a saw-mill with 11 hectares of land in Geretsberg, Austria and built up Kraiburg Austria.

Vipal Rubber will launch a second new product at Reifen 2014, joining its VL140 on Hall 10 Stand 10C32. The Brazilian retread components manufacturer will prepare for its country’s hosting of the World Cup by launching the VT190 tyre tread for highway cargo transportation. The tread has small and medium truck, minibus, pickup and light commercial vehicle applications.

Retreaded truck tyre production amongst members of the Retread Manufacturer Association (RMA) rose 1.8 per cent to 463,591 units in 2013. However, at the same time pre-cure retread sales are said to have fallen 4.7 per cent to 113,676. Meanwhile mould cure retread reportedly benefited from this and sales grew 4.1 per cent to 347,915.
