Leading German retreader Ihle Group files for insolvency
The Ihle Group, headquartered in Günzburg (Bavaria) yesterday filed for bankruptcy at the local court in Neu-Ulm. Managing director Jürgen Eigenbrodt has since confirmed this with Tyres & Accessories’ German sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung (www.reifenpresse.de), adding that applications for all four companies in the group have been submitted to the court in Neu-Ulm, which has in turn placed the business in provisional insolvency administration.

Two years after bringing its first hot cure retread tyre to the UK market with the GTR990 regional trailer pattern in size 385/65R22.5, GT Radial will launch a further two products as part of its REE Tread programme. The GDR690 regional commercial vehicle drive pattern will be available in 295/80 and 315/80 sizes, and will be produced, like the super single product, by a major retread producer in the south east of England. As with the previous tyre, it will be manufactured using only GT Radial casings. Tyrepress discussed the extension to the retread range with sales and marketing director Truck and Bus Tony McHugh and marketing director – Europe Commercial Tires, Peter Foulkes at Giti Tire (UK)’s new headquarters in Cheshire, near Manchester.

The UK distributor of Spanish 4x4 retread tyre brand Insa Turbo has reported “extremely strong” growth for the product, having increased year-on-year sales by more than a third in 2013. Micheldever (MTS)’s 4x4 specialist division Southam Tyres said unit sales have risen by 36 per cent, as sales director Alan Baldwin suggested several reasons for the brand’s strong performance.

Although a date still hasn’t been set for the inauguration of its large new tyre factory in India’s Tamil Nadu state, on 18 December Michelin inaugurated two new certified Recamic retreading facilities in the state. The commercial vehicle tyre retreading facilities, located in the Chennai and Pudukottai regions, have been established in collaboration with TVS Tread, the retreading arm of TVS Group.

The Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) and the American Commercial Tire Network (ACTN) have jointly launched a video highlighting the environmental benefits of retreading. The video can be seen on the retreading organisation’s YouTube channel and in the video section of its website. TRIB says it will also display and distribute the video at the trade shows it attends and offer it to news outlets in order to highlight the positive environmental aspects of retreading.

Galgo Pre-Q’s DP tread for use on Long-haul class-8 drive axle has been awarded SmartWay approval, the second time a Galgo tread has been accredited in his way. According to a company statement, this means the product meets the requirements of the SmartWay Technology programme that verifies low rolling resistance retreaded tyres which help reduce truck fuel consumption by at least 3%, according to the EPA. This programme is compliant with California Air Resources Board (CARB) as well.

According to the company, the Turkish market for HGV retreads is of paritcular strategic importance to Kraiburg Austria, with an annual volume of around 9,000 tonnes of material.

TRM, the Marangoni Meccanica division dedicated to the sale and development of retreading machinery, is reporting that its premium “Black Dragon” tyre building machines have pushed the envelope in terms of technology and helped inspire growth in mould cure retreading in general as well. The Black Dragon, purportedly the best machine of its kind available in the market for bead to bead application, is available in two versions: the Black Dragon 90, featuring a rotating twin turret serving a 90mm extruder for tread application and a vertical extruder for sidewall application, and the bigger version Black Dragon 120 (formerly known as Alpha Twin Dual Black Swan), featuring a 120mm extruder for the tread and two sidewall extruders.

For three decades, Harvey Brodsky was first employed by and later managing director of the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau – until the day that he wasn’t. In 5 October 2010, one month shy of Brodsky’s 30th anniversary with TRIB, he received a phone call from the bureau’s president and members of the board informing him that his services were no longer required, effective immediately. Many in this situation would be tempted to call it quits, however Brodsky showed that a dedicated retreading advocate doesn’t stay down for long. The Bandag brand is to be the only premium retread brand name used by Bridgestone in Europe. The company has decided to phase out the Bridgestone brand on its retreading products within our region as it considers Bandag to be the “world’s leading retread brand.” Therefore, current Bridgestone-branded pre-cured tread products will gradually be phased out in favour of Bandag-branded products.
