
Council approval granted for Continental’s ‘Taraxagum Lab Anklam’
Continental reports that plans to establish a research facility for its ‘Taraxagum’ Russian dandelion rubber project in Anklam, Germany have gained council approval. With this box ticked, the tyre maker is now in the process of acquiring around seven and a half acres (3 hectares) of land in a local business park and obtaining a building permit prior to erecting the first building on the site.

Continental building indoor tyre test centre in USA
A new indoor tyre test centre will be built at the Continental proving ground in Texas, USA. Around US$10 million will be invested to give the Uvalde site the capability of conducting indoor tests on all tyres manufactured in Continental’s North and South American plants.

Tyrexpo UK 2017 will be staged in Hall 7 of the NEC in Birmingham between 4 and 5 October, with around 3,500 square metres of floor-space. Hosted by SingEx Exhibitions of Singapore, it becomes the latest show to form part of the firms event portfolio of tyre and automotive related exhibitions. SingEx currently stages ongoing bi-annual tyre shows in Singapore and Johannesburg, South Africa along with yearly events in India (Delhi and Chennai) and the company is now turning its attention on the UK market.

Vredestein introduces Mille Miglia edition Sprint Classic tyre

SUV tyre with off-road capability: Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure
The latest tyre to join the Goodyear Wrangler family has gone on sale in European markets. The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure is designed to meet the demands of SUV drivers looking for a tyre with both on-road and off-road capabilities; Goodyear states that the new range provides “more robust off-road capability than the regular SUV tyre.” The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure is produced in 27 sizes for 15 to 19-inch rim diameters, with fitments available for vehicles such as the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, Mercedes G-Class, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser and the Volkswagen Amarok.

Monthly new car registrations reach all-time high
The UK new car market grew by 8.4 per cent in March. A total of 562,337 new cars were registered during the month, an amount that, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), is the highest monthly figure since records began. Registrations reached new heights as buyers seized the chance to buy cars before the new vehicle excise duty (VED) rates came into force. Under the new system implemented on 1 April, all new cars (except for those with zero emissions) are subject to an annual flat rate charge.

Besancon appointed YTC’s senior director of OTR sales
Bruce Besancon has joined Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) as the company’s senior director of OTR sales. In his new role, Besancon reports to Jeff Barna, the US Yokohama Rubber operation’s chief operating officer, and will be responsible for OTR sales. He takes over from long-time OTR sales director Tim Easter, who is returning to the field to work more closely with customers.

Pirelli industrial/consumer tyre business split continues
In parallel with presenting its full-year 2016 results, Pirelli has revealed further details of its complex ownership structure and how it is splitting its consumer and industrial tyre business into two separate entities. The latest news is that, as of March 2017, TP Industrial holding (which owns the newly renamed PTG, which was called Pirelli industrial until recently – more on that later) has been separated out from Pirelli’s consumer tyre business. In practice this means the assignment of TP Industrial holding to Marco Polo, Pirelli’s sole shareholder. According to Pirelli, the assignment will “ensure that Pirelli and TP Industrial can pursue their own independent paths to growth and independently developed strategies”.

Pirelli coloured tyres debut on Italian police cars
Pirelli’s new coloured edition tyres, which were launched at the Geneva Motor Show, have made their road-going debut with the Italian police force. Lamborghini has donated a new Huracan to Italy’s police, which like every Lamborghini is equipped with Pirelli tyres as original equipment. However, this is the first road-going example to use the new coloured edition tyres following their Geneva debut – and naturally, the colour that has been chosen is a specially-created police blue to match the Lamborghini’s distinctive police livery.
