Michelin has launched a new ‘B’ version of its Pilot Road 3 sport touring tyre. Specifically, the tyre is designed for large touring bikes including the BMW K1600GT. Using the same siped tread pattern as the original tyre, the new version also features a redesigned casing to aid stability when these bikes are fully-laden with luggage and a pillion.

According to Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ interim financial results for 1 January to 30 June, the Japanese made net sales of 333.7 billion yen (£2.3 billion). Despite this 3.6 per cent year-on-year rise in net sales, operating income fell 7.9 per cent to 29.7 billion yen (£194.9 million) and net income 6.7 per cent to 15.5 billion yen (£101.5 million).
It was announced today that Apollo Tyres is now Manchester United’s Official Tyre Partner in the UK and India. Tyres & Accessories was present at the deal’s signing at the club’s Aon Training Complex in Carrington and will report full details; the basics are that the three-year agreement will, amongst other things, see the two parties participate in a “joint community commitment to encourage healthy lifestyles and develop sporting skills in young people.”
Upon reporting its first quarter 2013 financials on 19 August, China’s Keyuan Petrochemicals Inc. also shared that it intends to add to the company’s Solution Polymerised Styrene Butadiene Rubber. “The increasing market demand in tyre and auto parts has resulted in increasing market demand for styrene, ABS and SSBR,” The company added that “rather than focusing on optimising the current utilisation rates for its different facilities,” it has decided upon expanding capacity through a number of projects, including a new SSBR plant.
Michelin has announced it will globally, and exclusively, supply tyres for the new Ferrari 458 Speciale. In developing its new Pilot Sport Cup 2 for the Ferrari, Michelin says it and the Italian car maker “pooled their cutting-edge engineering resources, wheel assembly expertise, passion for performance, measuring technology and the skills and analytical capabilities of their developers and test drivers.”
Between 6 and 13 October, the World Solar Challenge 2013 will take place in Australia, and Bridgestone has signed up as title sponsor. This will be the 12th time the competition has taken place since 1987, and the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2013 will see a record 45 teams from 26 countries compete in a 3000-kilometre cross-country race using only solar energy to power the vehicles. The event will feature three separate classes – Adventure Class, which will showcase cars built for previous events; Cruiser Class, which will be judged by design practicality, and Challenger Class, which will compete for the title of the world's most efficient solar car.

US retreading association the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau is partnering with the Retread Manufacturers Association to offer a ‘Retread Workshop Practice’ course in the UK, commencing in September 2013. The correspondence based course includes two ‘mock’ exams to monitor progress during the periods of study, extending from September 2013 to May 2014, and a final exam, which can be taken at a local university or technical college.
An analysis of 515,248 UK police force records obtained by consumer motoring champion, HonestJohn.co.uk, has revealed that cities in the North of England are the worst affected by car crime, with Manchester topping the league table. Between October 2011 and September 2012, 505 offences per 10,000 registered vehicles were reported in central Manchester. This figure is four times the national average for car crime, which HonestJohn.co.uk calculated as 121 offences per 10,000 vehicles. Even taking into account the higher levels of car crimes in urban areas, in part associated with the greater influx of vehicles entering city centres, the rate of reported offences was still 2.1 times the national 'urban' average of 242 offences per 10,000 vehicles.
Thousands of motorists are driving potentially dangerous cars as the number of vehicles on the road that have previously been written off increases. The National Association of Bodyshops (NAB) has previously called on the Competition Commission to review their position on write-offs during an investigation into the private motor insurance market.
However the Competition Commission say that they have no plans to review this further stating that despite the evidence they received during the investigation, they judged that write-offs were an issue relating to the supply of used cars and not related to the provision of Private Motor Insurance and related goods and services.
