Kumho Tire has been named a Red Dot Award winner for the third consecutive year. The German product design competition, which has now been held for 60 years, acknowledged three Kumho products, the Ecsta PS91, WinterCraft Wi61 winter tyre and the Wattrun VA31, which is exclusively fitted to Renault Samsung’s SM3 Z.E. This is the first time that a Korean tyre maker has been given a Red Dot Award three years in a row.
It’s back after an absence of three and a half years – between 11 and 15 November the Michelin Challenge Bibendum returns. This time the sustainable mobility action takes place in Chengdu, China; the choice of location was announced at a joint press conference by the Michelin Group and the Chengdu municipal government. Researchers from Yokohama Rubber report making progress in a project that may lead to lower external tyre noise and improved tyre aerodynamics. The Yokohama contingent is working together with a team of researchers at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), which is a part of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The team, led by Professor Kozo Fujii, has successfully conducted the world’s first simulation of near real-scale flow structures (turbulence) around a tyre rolling on a road surface and the acoustic waves, or noise, generated from these structures. Yokohama Rubber expresses confidence that the ability to simulate a flow structure that enables precise measurement of acoustic waves opens up potential for new technological breakthroughs, and the company says it will therefore continue to support further research in these areas.
Disc-Lock Europe, European distributor of the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut, is urging transport operators to act before, not after a wheel loss event. The company is exhibiting at the forthcoming Commercial Vehicle Show 2014 and Disc-Lock chairman and wheel security expert, Bob Hope, will be on hand to discuss, with transport operators and transport engineers, the common causes of wheel detachment from commercial vehicles and how they can be avoided.
Survey results don’t necessarily paint a flattering picture of UK motorists, and the outcome of the latest research from Kwik Fit is no exception. The fast fit network commissioned Consumer Intelligence to survey a group representative of the British motoring public, and it turns out that nine per cent of the 2,002 adults surveyed admitted they weren’t even aware that an MoT certificate is a legal requirement for cars over three years old. An equal number didn’t realise car insurance is compulsory and ten per cent said the same about a valid tax disc.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists is warning drivers about the dangers of distracted driving after research found that nearly one in ten (nine per cent) of drivers admit to crashing their cars because they were distracted. Just under one in twenty drivers (four per cent) say that someone was injured in the crash.
Apollo Tyres has selected the Geneva Motor Show as the backdrop for launching its latest on-road SUV high performance summer tyre. The Apterra H/P was developed at the company’s consumer tyre research and development centre in Enschede, The Netherlands and will be available in numerous international markets. The new addition to the tyre maker’s portfolio is being showcased at the Apollo pavilion in Hall 1, stand 1230.
Hankook Tire and German specialty chemicals firm Lanxess will work together on the development of synthetic rubber technologies for use in high performance tyres. The details of the two companies’ collaboration were laid out in a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 26 February. Under the agreement, Hankook and Lanxess will jointly work to expedite the development of synthetic rubber grades for high performance tyres. Lanxess says the MoU builds on the ties it has maintained with Hankook since 2008, when the tyre maker awarded it a long-term contract to supply solution styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) and neodymium performance butadiene rubber (Nd-PBR).
A two-year experiment by the Danish road directorate shows accidents have fallen on single-carriageway rural roads where the speed limit was raised. Accidents have also fallen on motorways where the speed limit has been increased.
The AA’s flood rescue team, AA Special Operations, is calling for a review of road signage around flooding and warning drivers of the penalties for ignoring them.
