Latin America’s first OTR tyre recycling plant opened
Colombian mining company Carbones del Cerrejon Ltd. has inaugurated Latin Americas first OTR tyre recycling plant, according to local news agency EFE. The plant aims to export part of its production to other countries in the region and to Asia. Commercial contacts have reportedly already been made for exporting the crumb rubber to South Korea, Chile and Brazil.

Halfords Autocentres has made its first staff appointment as a result of its recent partnership with the Dallaglio Foundation. Halfords Autocentres has hosted a series of employability events across its garages, inviting pupils from the Dallaglio Foundation to learn about the employment opportunities and skills available. Halfords Autocentres aims to have one apprentice in every centre by 2017. Autocentre apprenticeships have an 80 per cent success rate for the completion of the three year scheme. The apprentices qualify with an NVQ Level 3 Standard combing learning with practical, on-the-job training.

According to the IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), UK manufacturing fell to its lowest level since February 2013 in July. At 48.2 in July, the metric was down from 52.4 in June. This is only the second time since early 2013 that the PMI has fell to a sub-50.0 level. The move was reportedly the steepest decline since October 2012.

Continental’s interest in setting up a tyre factory in Thailand has been the subject of rumour for years, and once again the topic is on the table. Bangkok-based newspaper The Nation shares that Sirivan Koo-Amphorn, general manager of Continental Tyres Thailand, is meeting with government representatives this week to discuss incentives and other support that may persuade Continental to select Thailand ahead of rivals such as China. A decision on the location of Continental’s new factory is expected to be taken by the end of this year.

Workgroup discusses RFID tyre tag standards
Specialists in the field of radio frequency identification (RFID) and experts from the tyre and wheel industries met in Brussels earlier this month to discuss proposed international standards for RFID tyre tags. This first meeting of the ISO/TC31/WG10 Workgroup was held between 11 and 14 July and put flesh on the bones of four standards initially drafted in China with input from Mesnac. The Workgroup was convened by Dong Lanfei, an engineer within Mesnac’s Internet of Things business unit, with Pierre Loiret from Michelin acting as co-convenor.

Evonik opens silane competence centre
The new silanes competence centre Evonik Industries has built over the last two years is now officially open. The centre, at the company’s Rheinfelden site in Germany, was set up with a “low two-digit million euro” investment and will help Evonik continue to develop its research and development in the area of silane technology. The centre’s 100 employees are housed in a four-storey, 3,500 square metre building that contains state-of-the-art laboratories and, in addition to its R&D function, is now home to Evonik’s Applied Technology, Analytics, and Quality Management departments.
