Cooper Tire gains two Great Wall awards
Cooper Tire Asia has earned the 2018 Statistical Quality Award and the Simultaneous Engineering (SE) Achievement Award from Great Wall Motors Company Limited. Great Wall is Chinas largest SUV and pickup truck manufacturer, producing vehicles under the Haval and Great Wall brands. Cooper, which has been supplying original equipment tyres to Great Wall since 2011, was the only tyre company recognised by the automaker with these awards.

Why Doublestar’s Kumho purchase is a good idea
15 months after bidding got underway, Qingdao-based Doublestar and its consortium of Chinese banks and investors bought 45 per cent of the South Korean tyremaker Kumho Tire over the Easter weekend. Whatever other clauses are written into the deal, following the release of shares issued for the purpose of the sale, Kumho Tire’s creditors will own a 23.1 per cent shareholding in the tyre maker, down from 42.01 per cent. This makes the Chinese tyre firm controlling shareholders in South Korea’s Kumho Tire.

Falken drift driver James Deane returns to defend Formula Drift title
Falken drift driver and 2017 Formula Drift champion James Deane returns to the defend his title crown this week at the opening round of Formula Drift (6-7 April 2018, Long Beach, California). The Irish driver will race for the Worthouse Drift Team in his Falken Tire Nissan S15 drift car. He steered the car to four victories during the 2017 season, which led to his championship title and Falken being named Tire Manufacturer Champion for the second consecutive year.

March car registrations almost 16% lower than 2017 record
The UK new car market declined in March, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations fell -15.7 per cent compared with March 2017, which due to the impending arrival of new Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates was the biggest month ever for new car registrations. Nevertheless, registrations are still running at a historically high level and last month’s market was the fourth biggest March on record.

Continental, Osram sign lighting JV contract
Negotiations between Continental and lighting manufacturer Osram have concluded with the two parties in agreement on the shape and form of their new Osram Continental GmbH joint venture. Each of the partners will hold a 50 per cent share in the business, with Continental’s Harald Renner acting as chief financial officer and Dirk Linzmeier from Osram taking on the role of chief executive officer. Osram Continental is expected to be up and running in the second half of 2018 once all necessary approvals have been granted.
