Doncaster siblings jailed after tyre fire

Two siblings from Doncaster who ran an illegal waste tyre business which was later destroyed in an arson attack were sentenced to nine months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court on 23 December 2011. Jane Hopkins (45) and David Squire (31) both received the sentence. Between them Jane Hopkins and David Squire had pleaded guilty to six charges related to the illegal storage of tyres.

Tyretrade Ltd held an environmental permit since September 2008, but, according to the Environment Agency (EA) had never operated within its terms, as there was always more than the agreed number of tyres on their Whitlea Grove site. The company came to the attention of the EA on 13 January 2009 when Environment Agency officers visited the site and told Hopkins and Squire that action would be taken to revoke their permit on the 30th of that month if steps were not taken to reduce the amount of tyres. Three days later Hopkins, Squire, and Tyretrade Ltd were convicted at Doncaster Magistrates Court, for previous offences related to the depositing, keeping and treating of tyres. They both received conditional discharges of two years. The company was fined a total of £24,000. The company then went into voluntary liquidation.

Michelin/Volvo study – the ‘right tyre’ can cut CV fuel costs by more than 10%

Recently Michelin and truck manufacturer Volvo teamed up to study the influence of tyre and wheel-related factors on fuel consumption – and found having the right tyres, tyre pressure and wheel alignment reduce consumption by up to 15 per cent. Volvo notes this equates to a saving of as much as £6,650 per vehicle per year.

Nexen wins Good Design 2011 award

Nexen Tire Corporation recently won the 'Good Design 2011' award for its Winguard Sport, UHP winter tyre. The latest triumph follows winning the International Forum Design Award 2010 and Good Design award from Design Korea 2011.

The Good Design Award is conferred annually by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre of Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. It honours the yearly achievements of the best industrial and graphic designers and world manufactures for their pursuit of extraordinary design excellence in 25 categories including electronics, transportation, furniture, industrial machinery, architecture and so on.

Founded in 1950, and now in its 62nd year, Good Design is purportedly the world's oldest award of its kind. Submissions to the program are judged by juries on criteria for the highest aesthetic in terms of innovative design, new technologies, form, materials, construction, concept, function, utility, and energy efficiency, and sensitivity to the environment.

Bosch appoints Proctor to ‘Around the Wheel’ role

Bosch has appointed Iain Procter to the position of product specialist for Around the Wheel equipment within its Automotive Aftermarket division. Proctor’s sphere of responsibility includes tyre service equipment, four wheel alignment, lifts and brake testers. His role encompasses marketing and product management, including both technical and sales support for the Bosch and Beissbarth product ranges.

Starco appoints new Agri sales manager

As of 2 January, Olaf Sandeck has taken on the new role of sales manager, Agricultural products, at Starco’s German operation. Sandeck is based at the Starco GmbH regional headquarters in Germany – close to many of the major European agricultural businesses. His main priority will be to support and develop the sales of Starco agricultural. Sandeck will also participate in the introduction and development of the company’s new online catalogue and ordering system.

Cooper launches Discover S/T MAXX extreme off-road tyre

Cooper has launched its new 4×4 tyre for extreme conditions, the Discoverer S/T MAXX. The tyre’s compound and tread succeed the popular Discoverer STT. Cooper stated that the tyre will have its first serious test during the 2012 Dakar Rally, in which it will be fitted to Xavier Foj’s Toyota Land Cruiser 150; the third consecutive time the legendary Spanish driver will run on Cooper rubber. The tyre will be launched fully into Europe in February. It is M+S rated and available in sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inch.

ATS Euromaster and Michelin renew 58,000 vehicle fleet deal

ATS Euromaster and Michelin have renewed their contract with full service leasing specialist Arval, whose growing fleet numbers approximately 58,000 maintained contract hire cars and vans. The new contract lasts until the end of 2014.

Goodyear introduces Johnson as Emerging Markets VP

Henry Johnson has been appointed Goodyear Dunlop’s EMEA vice president, Emerging Markets, leading “the strategic growth and development of the company’s complete product range in South Africa, Turkey, Middle East, Russia and the Nordic countries.” Johnson was previously responsible for the Commercial Product business unit.

Rhineland removes non-clean oil tyres from German market

At the end of 2011 Rhineland became the first German federal state (after Baden-Württemberg in 2010) to carry out investigations into the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in motor vehicle tyres. The results were published on 12 December 2011. Two of the 19 tyres tested exceeded the limit and show that extender oils were used which do not meet the EU requirements. The offending types of tyres were reportedly removed from the market as a result of not meeting the legal requirements.

Rzonzef new Commercial Sales VP for Goodyear Dunlop EMEA

Goodyear Dunlop has announced its appointment of Michel Rzonzef as the new vice president of its EMEA Commercial Sales and Marketing Product business unit, responsible for “driving a single aligned strategy and operating plan for commercial vehicle tyres”, according to the company’s announcement.

Continental names new passenger car tyre sales director

Continental Tyre Group Ltd has named Phil Scanlan as its new passenger sales director. Scanlan takes over from Angus Smith who left the company after 10 years in the position to become commercial director with Micheldever Tyre Services at the end of 2011. Scanlan has been with Continental for over 25 years in varied positions such as regional sales manager, national accounts sales manager, car fleet sales manager, and European key account manager. Based at the German tyre manufacturer's UK head office in West Drayton, he will have overall responsibility for profitable sales and account management of independent, regional, national and wholesale accounts in the UK and ROI.

Kumho still committed to US plant

According to US news website Macon.com, Kumho Tire still intends to go ahead with its plant in Bibb County, Georgia. The site reported on 22 December that a Kumho delegation told local officials that the tyre maker remains committed to building the plant. “It is their expressed intent to build that plant and to build it here,” commented Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority attorney Kevin Brown at a recent meeting. “It’s costing them money not having that plant here. They need this in the United States.”

Toyo names new European marketing manager

David Stinissen has been appointed to the role of marketing manager at Toyo Tire Europe, effective 1 January 2012. Stinissen has taken charge of the Japanese tyre maker’s European marketing department and will carry out this new role in addition to continuing in his existing position as marketing manager for Toyo in the Benelux countries. He will be based both at Toyo Tire Europe’s headquarters in Willich, Germany and at Toyo Tire Benelux in Roosendaal, the Netherlands.

Yokohama releases English-language CSR report

The English language version of Yokohama Rubber’s 32-page CSR Report 2011 is now available. Two versions of the company’s corporate and social responsibility document are available – a print version, which is available to download as a pdf, and a digital version. This second option contains more detailed information than the print version, the company shares. Both versions were first published in Japanese in August 2011.

Hankook appoints first female VP

Hankook Tire has appointed a new vice-president of public relations. Kim Hyun-kyung, who is the company’s first vice-president, joins the Korean tyre maker after spending 18 years at the Samsung Group, where she was responsible for international public relations and sports marketing. “Kim is the first female to hold the title since the company was founded in 1941,” commented a Hankook official. “We will strengthen promotional work abroad to boost global sales.”
