Maxxis returns to the Autosport International show (10-13 January, 2013) where it will not only be showing off its latest products, but will also be highlighting the brand’s motorsport links – not least with a drifting demonstration by Team Japspeed, winners of the constructor’s title in the 2012 Maxxis British Drift Championship.
Last month Mark Donnelly was named as Pirelli Star Driver 2013 and therefore the winner of a fully-paid drive in the 2013 British Rally Championship. According to the company, Donnelly impressed a panel of four judges with his maturity, technical know-how, media awareness and raw talent behind the wheel.
German publication “AutoBild” reports it has uncovered the first case of sham tyre labelling. Shortly before Christmas, AutoBild posted news that “the first falsification has found its way from China to Europe.” According to AutoBild, a range of tyres produced by a particular Chinese manufacturer feature a label bearing a wet braking pictogram that differs from the one approved for use with the EU tyre label. Other aspects of the label that was used, including size, colour and form, are also unrepresentative of the label approved under EU regulations.
Toyo Tire & Rubber notes that in recent years there has been a trend towards tighter international relations, and this means enhanced governance and internal control as a corporate group are required. The Japanese company also says that in light of environmental and other issues, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) has become more important than ever. To cover these issues, Toyo has laid out two new documents, the Toyo Tires Group Charter of Corporate Behavior” and “Toyo Tires Group Code of Conduct,” which place top priority on compliance.
Kumho Tire U.S.A. reports that the Ecsta 4X has received a 2012 Good Design Award. The award, organised annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies, recognises design and innovation, sustainability, creativity, branding, ecological responsibility and technology in a number of areas. Kumho Tire was awarded this honour in the category of transportation, alongside companies such as BMW, Boeing and Hyundai.
Waking up to find your vehicle’s tyres punctured is often followed by a phone call to the police, but if you live in the city of Abbottabad, in Pakistan, a call to the cops will also put you directly in contact with the tyre-wrecking culprits. The Express Tribune newspaper reports that the Abbottabad police, a force fed up with criticism about its powerlessness to prevent cars from being stolen, has introduced a new means of foiling thieves – the police opine that if you can’t move a car you can’t steal it, and based on this logic police officers now spend their nights puncturing the tyres on parked cars in order to immobilise them.
With the aim of further improving its financing structure and maturity profile, while enhancing its flexibility, Continental has refinanced its syndicated loan, which is due in April 2014. Within the scope of the planned refinancing, the loan volume is to be reduced slightly – to a total of 4.5 billion euros – and split up into two tranches with different maturities: a 1.5 billion euro term loan with a term of three years, and a five-year revolving 3 billion euro credit facility. Conti also intends to “ease the documentation complexity” through this refinancing.
Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations has supplied Firestone tyres to the IZOD IndyCar Series since the league began in 1996, and the tyre maker recently announced it will remain the series’ sole tyre supplier through the 2018 race season. “Firestone performance and safety have been synonymous with IndyCar racing for more than 100 years,” commented Al Speyer, executive director, Firestone Racing. “We are excited about the opportunity to continue the on going success of this series by extending the Firestone brand’s history in the sport through the 2018 season. We treasure the relationships we have fostered with the league, drivers, owners and various other partners involved with the sport through the years, and look forward to continuing our legacy of high performance for which Firestone tires are known.”

Mitas is recalling 1,752 tubeless E-07 motorcycle tyres. The tyres were mainly sold to customers in Europe. The sizes subject to recall are: 110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 TL MI, 100/90-19 M/C 57T E-07 TL MI and 110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 DAKAR TL MI. According to the company, the problem that has sparked the recall is that under extreme conditions the affected tyres can “suddenly loose air pressure.”

Infinity’s ‘Win a Bentley’ prize draw, which has been running between September and November, reached its finale last week. Working alongside its UK distributor, Bond International, Infinity Tyres held the final prize draw at Bond’s head office near York, where members of the Infinity Europe team including Jorge Crespo (Infinity’s European General Manager) and Clive Mansfield (Sales and Marketing Manager) joined with Steve Tidmarsh, Finance Director of Bond International and Paul Palmer of Savoy Tyres to host the day’s events.

Continental presented its estimation that the UK car, 4×4 and van tyre market remains worth around 33 million tyres at the launch of its partnership tyre supply deal with Mercedes-Benz World, a performance demonstration facility on the historical site of the Brooklands circuit. This number is similar to 2011, though Conti noted several trends affecting the make-up of this figure in 2012, most notably the growth in part worn tyre sales, estimated to represent just under 10 per cent of the total market. Initial signs of the impact of tyre labelling, introduced as a mandatory measure in November, are minimal, with premium segment sales holding up. Conti calls any current definitive assessment too early to truly assess, however premium tyre sales have held up well. Meanwhile the quality segment has come under pressure from aggressive pricing on either side, with brands in this segment struggling to maintain share, according to Conti.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems has agreed to to acquire Maine Industrial Tire, a US-based solid tyres manufacturer. Maine Industrial Tire’s headquarters is in Massachusetts, US, while its production facilities are located in Pennsylvania, U.S., and Xingtai (Hebei), China. Annual sales amount to approximately 600 million Swedish Krone and approximately 650 people are employed in the company. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
