62% of motorists would consider part-worn tyres, reports Kwik-Fit

According to a recent study commissioned by Kwik-Fit, as many as 1.9 million part-worn tyres may have been purchased by UK motorists in this past year – and many more drivers would contemplate buying them. The study of 2,024 UK adults, carried out by ICM Research in September 2011, not only showed that the aforementioned six per cent of car owners fitted part-worn tyres to their vehicles; it also revealed that as many as 19.3 million motorists, or 62 per cent of car owners, would consider buying part-worns.

Peugeot UK launches winter tyre scheme

Peugeot UK has announced its own winter tyre scheme, following in the footsteps of other manufacturers, such as BMW, Suzuki and Volvo. The company’s new “swap and store” service being provided by dealers enables customers to equip their cars with four cold weather tyres and have their Summer ones placed in storage.

Winter tyres still overwhelmingly a minority purchase – survey

Quoting figures from a survey conducted by online research firm One Poll, Manheim Auctions notes than less than five per cent of British motorists plan on purchasing winter tyres this year. Out of the 3,000 respondents to the August 2011 survey, 95.5 per cent said they are not planning to buy winter tyres despite last year’s hard winter.

Tyre convictions at a four year high

The number court convictions related to d driving on defective tyres in England and Wales is at a four year high, according to the Ministry of Justice and the Home Office. TyreSafe has released details of the figures which show that in 2010, 10,475 motorists were successfully convicted – almost 1,000 more than the previous year. The figures highlight the scale of the problem of illegal tyres in the UK, especially as they do not take into account tyre related matters dealt with by the police at the roadside.

Suzuki now offering winter tyre programme

Suzuki has joined the growing ranks of tyre dealers and more recently car dealerships offering a winter tyre programme. Michael-Le Flay, Suzuki’s aftersales marketing manager, explained: "Many people are unaware of the fact that when temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius, the rubber in standard tyres becomes harder and less flexible, which affects braking and cornering performance.

Confused.com tyre survey

Insurance price comparison site Confused.com commissioned a survey of 2,000 drivers on tyre-related matters to coincide with tyre safety month. The site points out that drivers could see their motor insurance claims denied, get 12 penalty points on their licence and face fines of up to £10,000, simply by failing to take proper care of their tyres.

Tyre hotels “expected to be popular” – ATS-E

ATS Euromaster marked the end of the summer holiday period by opening its network of tyre hotels. The retailer is marketing the idea by suggesting that motorists can check-in their summer tyres for a winter break, while they enjoy the benefits cold weather tyres offer when temperatures drop below seven degrees Celsius. ATS-E states that it expects rooms at the hotels to be popular, given current weather predictions, and the desire not to be caught out for the third winter season running.

Mums lax with tyre care, Cooper Tire reports

Although a regimen of over-cautiousness seems de rigueur in parenting these days, when it comes to children and road safety the average mother takes a more casual attitude. A recent US survey conducted by Cooper Tire & Rubber in partnership with the websites Cars.com and MotherProof.com showed only one per cent of mums consider automotive maintenance as a priority in "keeping their children safe" – and none specifically mentioned tyre maintenance as a priority.

Car care more popular than church: Kwik-Fit

It used to be said that cleanliness is next to godliness, yet these days it seems we’re more likely to kneel when washing the Mondeo than in fervent prayer. A study conducted by ICM Research for Kwik-Fit shows that some 6.2 million, or 19 per cent of British motorists, religiously clean and check their vehicle at least once a week. This compares with just 4.2 million Britons who, according to a Tearfund research report from 2007, attend church with such regularity. On a monthly basis the gap grows even wider; the ICM survey of 2,000 UK adults indicates almost three times as many people, or 21.5 million, attend to their vehicular ahead of their spiritual needs. And it may or may not be coincidence that the most popular time to attend to car care chores is between 10am and 11am on Sunday – a direct clash with many church services.

Abu Dhabi tyre blowout death toll up to 13 in six months

The number of people killed in accidents caused rapid deflation of tyres or blowouts in Abu Dhabi rose to 13 in the first six month of 2011, according to report in UAE newspaper The National. There were 41 accidents caused by burst tyres during the first half of the year, compared with 30 during the same period last year. Thirteen people died as a result of those accidents compared with 10 last year. The number of injuries nearly tripled in the same period, from six to 17.

The figures follow the news in June that the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology announced it was working closely with the Ministry of Interior to review the tyre regulations. A task force comprising the country's largest tyre suppliers and manufacturers has been assembled to look at the technical aspects of the regulations. The proposed regulations on the manufacture, handling, and storage of tyres, will be presented to the country’s Cabinet next month for approval.

Easy Tyres & Autocentres refurbishes two with £40,000 investment

Easy Tyres & Autocentres, the largest of HiQ’s franchisees, has invested £40,000 on extensive refurbishments to its Peterborough and Stratford branches. The stores, based in Bourges Boulevard and Western Road respectively, have seen considerable increases in footfall, according to Easy managing director Chris Kisby, having implemented HiQ’s network-wide strategies for improving the retail environment.

HiQ hits 50 automotive technician accreditations

HiQ’s promise that all of its 700 fast fit technicians would automotive technician accreditation by the end of 2012 has reached the first milestone on its way to fulfilment as HiQ Tamworth technician Craig Cowell became the network’s 50th to achieve the goal. The fast fit network believes the voluntary ATA accreditation is an “effective way of driving personal standards across the network,” with the external assessment making external the network’s internal training policy.

Bosch online booking system goes live

Independent garage network, Bosch Car Service, has today launched a new online booking service in the UK. The company says the system, which has been in development over the past year, was launched to provide customers with a simple-to-use facility through which to book their vehicles in for a number of different services. Customers can book their appointments through the boschcarservice.co.uk website.

Fuel prices still distributors' greatest problem says FTA

The price of fuel is still the biggest headache for transport companies battling to cope with rising costs, with haulage rates failing to keep up, according to a report published by the Freight Transport Association.

FTA's Manager's Guide to Distribution Costs 2011 calculates that the cost of diesel for commercial vehicle fleets rose by 15.6 per cent in the twelve months to 1 April 2011. The second biggest increase was in the cost of overheads, followed by vehicle maintenance. The total rise in vehicle operating costs to 6.8 per cent outstripped the rise in domestic haulage rates, which increased by an average of 3.41 per cent. International haulage rates increased on average by 5.40 per cent.

North West motorists put cars before spouses

Buying a new car is one of the most significant purchases anyone can make but some motorists in North West considered it more important than choosing a new house, picking their own children’s names and even deciding who to marry, according to a new study.

On average local drivers take just under three months (2.74) to decide what new motor to buy, while almost a quarter (23.77 per cent) need up to six months to choose before they commit to one. The national average is 2.94 months.
