This year the top 25 table has been characterised by growth virtually across the board. However, something that stands out in positions 15 to 25 is that there have been a couple of new entries onto the ranking in addition to this. Exemplifying stability in the market, In ‘n’ Out Autocentres appears to have remained in 15th position with 27 branches.
Eden Tyres & Servicing has started work on its 20th tyre centre. According to the company, the latest addition is “on target to be opening in a few months’ time”. Eden representatives haven’t revealed where branch number 20 will be located, but they have confirmed that it will be one of at least two branches to open in 2022.
Tyre specialists may not have been named as outright winners this year, but there was at least one tyre retailer named in most of the Motor Ombudsman’s regional Garage Star awards categories. Nearly 1,100 customers submitted a nomination for an individual team member or business accredited to one or more of The Motor Ombudsman’s four Motor Industry Codes of Practice, who they felt had gone above and beyond to assist them during the last 12 months.
In April we reported that Eden Tyres & Servicing was planning to open its 19th retail branch in 2021. Roughly five months later, the company which is 40 this year has achieved that target with the opening of a new location in Grantham.
Eden Tyres & Servicing turns 40 this year, and in contrast to many people who reach this milestone, the company has never been in better shape. When Tyres & Accessories first published its UK tyre retail network ranking back in 2011, Eden Tyres operated just seven outlets. This number had grown to 18 by the time we published the ‘leading 25 UK tyre retail chains 2021’ table last month. A 19th outlet is due to open its doors before the year is out, and several more are in planning.
Growing tyre retail chain Eden Tyres & Servicing currently has 18 branches in its network of tyre retail businesses. However, at the end of March company representatives revealed that Eden Tyres will open its 19th branch later in 2021.
Outside of the top five, there is a certain degree of stability amongst the remaining five companies. Those in sixth, seventh and eighth position (McConechy’s, The Tyre Group and Lodge) appear to have remained stable in terms of branch count, with 61, 58 and 40 branches respectively. However, it is worth considering all this in the context of ULM Services Ltd the fleet-orientated cooperation Universal, Lodge and McConechy’s set up during 2017. Put those three partners together and we have 119 branches and another strong contender for fifth position on the table.
In last year’s ranking of the top tyre retailers in the UK, Tyres & Accessories predicted that the pace of change in the top 20 chains by branch count would result in some jostling for position. This has proved entirely accurate, as two major acquisitions have brought two of 2017’s top 20 into the fold of higher ranked companies, leading to both Micheldever/Protyre, leapfrogging HiQ into fourth place as predicted last year, and Lodge Tyre, into the top 10 from joint-14th last year, making significant jumps in this year’s table. Most other retailers have held relatively stable positions in terms of the number of stores, while our most recent additions to the table, Eden Tyres (15 stores) and Elite Garages (13) were identified as narrowly missing out on places last year.
Hankook Tyre UK has extended its courtesy car scheme with the introduction of a larger fleet of branded Hyundai i10s offered to a selection of supportive dealers across its UK retail network. The scheme, set up in 2015, is designed to incentivise supportive dealers with 25 new 67-plate Hankook-liveried Hyundai i10s. The car was selected for its low running costs, and has been supplied to a selection of retailers around the UK over a two-and-a-half-year period as a courtesy car.
On Monday 3 April Eden Tyres opened its 13th tyre retail location in Ashby de la Zouch. Eden Tyres has grown rapidly in recent years and the chain is now more than twice the size it was in 2009. And what’s more, with the company reporting bookings in the diary every day of opening week, the new business has got off to a great start.
