Michelin Bad Kreuznach plant to produce Selfseal
During last November’s Michelin Challenge Bibendum event, the tyre maker announced its intention to begin production of ‘Selfseal’ tyres, which contain a polymer that immediately closes holes in the event of a puncture, during the course of this year. It appears these products will be manufactured at Michelin’s Bad Kreuznach factory in Germany; during an event at the site, plant manager Cyrille Beau confirmed the plant’s selection as a Selfseal production site.

NTDA to run conference alongside 2015 dinner and Tyre Industry Awards
The NTDA has announced plans to host a one-day conference on the 1 October, alongside its popular Annual Dinner and Tyre Industry Awards. The event, which will be sponsored by Zenises, is moving to the International Convention Centre (ICC), Birmingham. According to the NTDA, the ICC was chosen for its “accommodating layout and fluid walkways connecting 10 halls and 10 executive meeting rooms, together with a dedicated registration area and foyers”. Furthermore, the venue has hosted many high profile events including the G8 Summit in 1998 and is the only UK venue to have hosted all three of the major Political Party Conferences in the last five years.

Nexen Tire’s Roadian HTX RH5 has won a US Good Design Award. The company’s N’FERA RU5 also won the Korean Good Design Awards and the firm’s N’blue Premium won the Korean Pin up Design Awards. The US Good Design Awards is an annual design awards programme organized by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design (Illinois) in cooperation with the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

The US Department of Commerce has reduced preliminary countervailing duties on tyres manufactured in China, according to local news sources. The countervailing duties are in addition a 4-per cent import tariff. The Herald, which is distributed in Chester county area of South Carolina where Giti will soon break ground on its new tyre factory, reported that the commerce department has lowered Giti’s rate to 11.74 per cent from 17.69 per cent. At the same time the rate for most other Chinese-manufactured tyres dropped to 12.03 per cent from 15.69 per cent.

Michelin acquires land for German plant expansion
The German town of Bad Kreuznach reports Michelin’s acquisition of a 70,000 square metre land plot alongside its facility there, an area that will be used to expand the plant. The land is part of the ‘Marshall Kaserne’ site, a former US Army barracks in the Rhineland-Palatinate that closed in 2001.

Hideto Katsuragawa has been named president of Yokohama Rubber’s Tire Business, effective 1 January 2015. He takes over from Hikomitsu Noji and carries out this new function alongside his existing roles as Chief Tire Marketing officer, head of the O.E. Tire Sales & Marketing division, and president of Yokohama Continental Tire Co., Ltd.

A court in China has ruled in favour of Bridgestone Corporation, determining that two Chinese companies, Jianxin Rubber (Fujian) Co. Ltd and PT.Beststone Rubber Industries Co. Ltd., infringed the Japanese tyre maker’s design rights. The Zhengzhou Higher Peoples Court ruled that a pre-cure tread the companies manufactured and sold for truck and bus tyres violated Bridgestone’s design rights.

Trelleborg has optimised its Dealer Locator app for iOS and Android smartphones, adding the details of more than 5,000 professional agricultural tyre and machine dealers. Already available on tablets, the Trelleborg Dealer Locator is offered in five languages and identifies the Trelleborg tyre dealer nearest to a selected location. The manufacturer has been expanding its suite of mobile device applications throughout 2014, having identified this area as a valuable service for its customers. It has introduced updated Load Calculator, Tire Efficiency, and Tire Book apps, in addition to innovating its marketing approach through a video game.

£6 billion to be invested in fixing potholes
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced that a record £6 billion will be spent on tackling potholes and improving local roads between 2015 and 2021. The announcement was made today (23 December 2014) and the investment amounts to £976 million a year, apparently enough to fix around 18 million potholes across the country. Patrick McLoughlin said: “Roads play a significant part in everyday life. Poorly maintained local roads, blighted by potholes, are a menace to all road users, particularly during the festive period as people travel to see family and friends. It is vital we have good quality roads. This government has already taken strong action by spending £1 billion more on local roads maintenance than was spent in the previous parliament.

Pirelli staff raise money for charity
Hats off to Pirelli for putting their hats on this December and raising money for charity. According to the company, Burton-based employees pulled on festive headwear to support “Blind Children UK”. Marg Mcfarlane, from the security department at Pirelli, helped to coordinate the activity at the company. She said: “It was great to see colleagues get into the Christmas spirit and wear quirky hats to work – there were some sights! Everyone donated £2, which will help contribute to changing a life for a blind child.”
