Independent tyre dealers network Point S has more than 1,950 locations in 20 countries, and continues to pursue its international development programme with the announcement that it has entered the Turkish market. The Master Franchise agreement between Point S, represented by its managing directors Jürgen Benz and Christophe Rollet, and Senturkler Holding, represented by co-owner and vice-chairman Senturk Mehmet, was signed in June. The first flagship store was officially opened on 21 September in presence of Senturkler and Point S representatives as well as numerous local politicians, journalists and manufacturers.
Hankook Tire America has officially opened a new distribution centre in New Jersey, reports Tire Review. The new 400-000-square-foot warehouse is Hankook’s fifth in the US – the others are located in Tennessee, Texas, Illinois and California – and it will service customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. The centre’s opening ceremony was attended by some 100 guests, including Hankook Tire America President Soo Il Lee, Frank Gambatese, the mayor of South Brunswick, and Hankook dealers and employees.
Nokian Tyres is widely acknowledged as a winter tyre pioneer, but other companies also played a part in the introduction of season-specific tyres. One such firm is Semperit, who this year celebrates three quarters of a century in the winter tyre business.
California-based renewable products company Amyris, Inc. reports it has signed a definitive agreement with Michelin to collaborate in the development and commercialisation of isoprene sourced from renewable feedstocks. The substance being developed, Amyris No Compromise renewable isoprene, is expected to be ready for commercialisation and use in tyre industry and other applications in 2015. Amyris says Michelin has committed itself to “off-take volumes” for a ten-year period. In addition, Amyris will retain the right under the agreement to market its renewable isoprene to other customers.
A1 Motor Stores, whose battery range includes the Yuasa, UK Batteries and Easystart brands, reports that 2010 was an “exceptional year for battery sales.” The company believes strong sales last year were pushed in part by a double-whammy winter that delivered severe weather both before and after Christmas: Cold weather, A1 points out, accelerates the demise of a ‘tired’ battery as the electro-chemical reaction slows and performance is reduced as the temperature plummets.
Current FIA strategy is to increase its championships’ association with “road relevant technologies and environmental sustainability in motor sport” while maintaining control of the costs involved. This focus was reflected in several decisions approved at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) on September 23. Amongst a number of points agreed upon at the Singapore-based meeting was the decision to reduce the number of tyres available to competitors in next year’s FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).
In a press release intended for all markets excepting the US, Compagnie Générale des Etablissements Michelin announced that on 21 September it repurchased more than 10 per cent of the company’s lowest-ranking subordinated notes (titres subordonnés remboursables de dernier rang), due 3 December 2033, for an aggregate nominal amount of 500,000,000 euros admitted to trading on the regulated market of NYSE Euronext Paris under ISIN FR0010034298. Following the repurchase, the outstanding nominal amount is 140,628,000 euros.
Zircotec’s ceramic exhaust coating has helped a British Touring Car Championship team reduce its car’s underbonnet temperatures. Team Dynojet’s Toyota Avensis has seen an improvement in performance and reliability since using Zircotec’s ThermoHold coating, delivering a string of podium finishes. Race engine developers X CTech R selected the ThermoHold-based thermal barrier to deliver close to a 37 per cent drop in under-bonnet temperatures. This protects the gearbox from the effects of heat, allowing the team to focus on other areas of performance, resulting in three podiums in the last two meetings.
Swedish car brand Saab is offering winter tyre packages through its dealerships in October, offering alloy wheels and winter rubber from £559, excluding fitment. David Leighton, business development manager for aftersales at Saab GB, notes that winter tyres “reduce braking distances and suffer less wear and tear, thus offering not only peace of mind, but a cost-saving benefit too.”
MotoGP travels to Japan on 2 October for round 15 of the championship at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit near Mito and Utsunomiya, a few hours’ drive from the Tokyo headquarters of tyre supplier Bridgestone Corporation. The event is the rearranged Japanese leg of the series, the aftermath of the tsunami making the original 24 April date impossible to keep; the event now takes place one week before an overseas back-to-back pair of races on Australia and Malaysia. The date change puts the race at the same time of year as it was held last season, the first weekend in October, so the weather conditions are expected to be similar – around 25 degrees Celsius ambient. This means that the tyre compound options are unchanged, but with the addition of the third soft compound front slicks, although the rear asymmetric slicks have been modified slightly.
Toyo Tires has supported a Golf Day organised by Mike Craddock, director of Malvern Tyres. The Captain’s Charity Day, held at the Harpenden Golf Club where Craddock is the captain, raised money for MacMillan Cancer Support, with the collected funds to be spent in the county of Hertford. Amongst the many fundraising activities was an auction for which Toyo donated a set of tyres to the value of £500. The evening event raised a total of £3,500.
Tyre Safety month begins on Saturday and ATS Euromaster has marked the occasion by reminding motorists that driving with illegal tyres risks a £2,500 fine and three penalty points for each illegal tyre on their vehicle. With the latest Department for Transport report clocking 860 reported accidents on British roads where illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor – including 17 fatal incidents and 165 serious accidents – safety is also a major part of ATS-E’s message. During Tyre Safety Month, ATS Euromaster is offering free tyre safety inspections at any of its 370 centres throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Swedish manufacturer Trelleborg will present its new C-Series range of tyres, designed specifically for the construction sector, at next month’s International Construction & Utility Equipment Expo in the US. This new line-up includes off-the-road tyres and rubber tracks.
