With giant OTR tyres containing enough cooped up energy to project a person two kilometres, the particular importance of tyre safety on mine sites is perhaps underestimated. One way of redressing this balance, raising awareness of the pressure and condition of a tyre and at the same time saving emissions, fuel and therefore money, is to employ tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) to keep an eye on these large and expensive components.
Transense Technologies plc has announced that its trading division, IntelliSAW has entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with EL PE Engineers, headquartered in Vadodara, India. EL PE currently provides advanced systems technology and engineering support for the electric power industry.
As part of this agreement EL PE will provide exclusive distribution for IntelliSAW’s innovative wireless/passive temperature monitoring system in the Indian market. In return for exclusive terms EL PE has agreed to a minimum revenue target over the next two years of US$375,000.
When not producing tyres, Germany’s Continental AG spends its time developing automotive and mobility technologies. This requires the company to concentrate heavily on research and development, and a current focus is on technology that eliminates the greatest risk factor on our roads – human error.
Ex-Bridgestone research scientist Xiaorong Wang has been indicted on charges of stealing trade secrets from the tyre maker and providing investigators with false information. Before his dismissal on 14 April 2010, Wang worked at the Bridgestone Americas Center for Research and Technology in Akron, Ohio; it is alleged that after being fired, Wang downloaded proprietary information and removed it from Bridgestone premises.
Some 2.3 million truck tyres are currently sold in South Africa each year, with the market fairly evenly divided between sales of new tyres and retreads. Competing in the retread market are numerous familiar global names such as Bridgestone Bandag, Michelin and Goodyear Dunlop, yet one of the longest established retreading sector firms is local player Leader Tread. Michelin North America is using this week’s Mid-America Trucking Show to debut the new Michelin X Multi Energy D drive tyre for regional and emerging super regional applications. The SmartWay-verified tyre delivers enhanced fuel efficiency, optimised traction and long tread life to provide significant value and performance, the tyre maker said.
Point-S has selected Autogem Motor Concepts as a supply partner to its UK network. Writing in a letter to members, company representatives explained that Autogem offers “a number of solutions to the Point-S network through [its] well established and competitive consumables programme”. In short this means, but is by no means limited to, the delivery of TPMS repair and service equipment and products.
Snap-on Tools has appointed Mark Houston as its new Warrington branch manager. In his new role Mark Houston will be responsible for the successful management of Snap-on’s 75 franchisees in an area which extends from Carlisle to South of Birmingham and includes North Wales. He will be supported by a back-up team of 5 Field managers.
Farmers should exercise caution when switching from conventional wheels and tyres to row-crop equipment this spring, advises Mitas Tyres. As ISO 9000 and Health & Safety regulations now place a heavy responsibility on tyre suppliers and equipment operators, Mitas cautions that fitting incorrect replacements could have severe consequences, including equipment failure or breaches of legal obligations.
When Tyres & Accessories last caught up with Tire Group International a year ago, the Miami, Florida-based wholesaler was able to report a highly successful 2010, with revenues up 35 per cent year-on-year and unit sales climbing 26 per cent to around 1,200,000 pieces. Back then company CEO Antonio Gonzalez said he expected continued growth in 2011, and TGI has delivered on this forecast; last year the US wholesaler achieved a 25 per cent increase in unit sales and revenue grew by a third. And while we’re currently less than a quarter of the way through 2012 and the year may yet throw a surprise or two in our direction, recent and current developments at TGI indicate the company will once again report strong annual growth.
Some financial analysts are recommending Continental shares ahead of a possible further sale of some of the stake directly owned by current 49.9 per cent shareholders Schaeffler Group. “Even if Schaeffler were to do another private placement of Conti shares, we think it might not be enough to satisfy investor appetite. We regard Conti as a structural, earnings and free cash flow driven overweight offering an attractive entry point,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in an investor’s note published 22 March.
Forget that song made famous by Kermit the Frog – it’s never been easier to be green. The tyre industry has embraced the trend towards more environmentally-friendly products, and there is hardly a serious player in the business that doesn’t offer consumers a green option.
Schaeffler Group has reported record 2011 sales of 10.7 billion euros and a 12 per cent increase in pre-tax profits to 1.7 billion euros. It is the first time in the company’s history that sales topped the 10 billion euro mark. Schaeffler Group directly owns a 49.9 per cent stake in Continental AG.
Commenting at the press conference where the news was announced, Schaeffler AG CEO Dr Juergen Geissinger said: “Following our success in 2010, we were able to further improve our earnings across the board in 2011. That demonstrates the dedicated commitment of our employees around the world. Our wide range of components and systems for the automotive and the industrial sectors puts us in a very good strategic position as a globally oriented company.”
At its annual press conference on 22 March, specialty chemicals company Lanxess reported record sales and earnings figures during the 2011 financial year. Highlights the company touched upon were a 23 per cent rise in sales to 8,775 million euros, EBITDA pre exceptionals up 25 per cent to 1,146 million euros – the first time the one billion euro mark has been exceeded. The company’s EBITDA margin pre exceptionals came in at 13.1 per cent, compared with 12.9 percent the year before. Net income rose disproportionately compared with sales and EBITDA pre exceptionals, improving by one third from the previous year to 506 million euros. These positive results were achieved, the company stated, thanks to its price-before-volume strategy, successful acquisitions and focus on the emerging markets.
