Evonik Establishes Independent Carbon Black Company

A reorganisation of Evonik’s carbon black activities has led to the founding of Evonik Carbon Black GmbH as a legally independent management company under the umbrella of Evonik Industries. The new company came into being on July 1 with Jack Clem in the position of CEO and Rainer Wobbe serving as CFO. The company’s operational headquarters is currently located in Frankfurt, Germany, however it will move to the city of Hanau on October 1. Evonik says the existing carbon black product portfolio and customer relationships will not be affected by the spin-off.

XLite Wheels Gains Truck OE Approval

Wheels India’s latest forged aluminium commercial vehicle wheels, distributed under the xlite name in UK and Europe by Manchester-based Motor Wheel Service, have received OE approval. According to the company, three sizes (8.25 x 22.5 inches, 9.00 x 22.5 inches and 11.75 x 22.5 inches) have been awarded the accreditation. The process to obtain certification took four years.

Sihong Benteng Launches New Solid Tyres

China-based Sihong Benteng Rubber Products Co, Ltd has announced plans to launch two new solid tyres. The firm reports that it has developed the new products, which come in 40×15-24 (385/65-24) and 445/65-24 sizes for boom lift applications. Last month the firm told Tyres & Accessories that it now has the capacity to produce 5000 off-the-road tyres/year. Situated five hours from Shanghai airport and 2 hours from Nanjing airport by car, the company reports that it is “mainly engaged in manufacturing various specifications [of] engineering tracks, agricultural tracks, OTR and bicycle tyres.”

BIPAVER Appoints New President, Presidium

At its annual general assembly in June, members of the European retreading association BIPAVER elected a new presidium. Taking over the reins as president is former vice-president Jan Driessen, from VACO in the Netherlands. Former president, Italy’s Brenno Benaglia (AIRP) now serves in the capacity of vice-president, and Portugal’s José Silva Gomes, from the ANIRP, has been appointed second vice-president. The BIPAVER offices remain, as before, in the premises of the Dutch tyre organisation VACO.

Sri Lanka Encourages Tyre Rubber Production

At the end of June Sri Lanka’s government announced plans to encourage small farmers to produce more tyre grade rubber. Local news sources reported that plantations industries minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said a policy decision was taken aimed at increasing production of the RSS 3 type rubber grade: “Although most people think RSS 1 is the best and it is, the biggest demand is for RSS 3…That’s what big industrialists want. They are the main buyers of rubber.”

VMI to Supply Belshina with Giant Tyre Machinery

Belarusian media reports that tyre maker Belshina has signed a contract with VMI Holland for the supply of equipment to be used in the construction of giant tyres. Some 33.5 million euros has apparently already been invested for the production of mining tyres, and the company is intends to produce 21.00R35, 27.00R35, 33.00R51, 36.00R57 tyres for CIS and international customers.

Maxxis Launches UK Facebook Page

In a bid to provide an additional channel of communication with retailers and consumers, Maxxis Tyres (UK) has turned its attention to the social media scene. The tyre maker has set up a Facebook page to raise its profile and enable everyone associated with the company to keep up to date with latest developments, particularly in relation to its sponsorship deals and promotional activities in support of the performance/tuning market.

Toyo Announces Audi TT/S OE Supply

Toyo Tire & Rubber reports its Proxes T1 Sport (AO) has been chosen by Audi AG for original equipment fitment on the Audi TT and TTS models. The 255/35 R19 96Y size tyre will be, says Toyo, exclusive fitment on Audi TTS models specified with 19-inch wheels and “one of a select few makes” of tyres fitted to Audi TT models ordered with optional 19-inch wheels. The Toyo shod Audi models will be available in European, North American and Asian markets.

Hard Compound GP3 Tyres Debut at Silverstone

The fourth round of the inaugural GP3 series took place at Silverstone over the weekend and gave drivers their first opportunity to savour the circuit’s revised track layout, which features seven new corners that have increased lap length and average speed. Silverstone also saw the debut of tyre supplier Pirelli’s hard compound tyres, which were left on the rack in favour of the medium compound in Barcelona and Istanbul followed by the soft compound during round three in Valencia.

Michelin Demonstrates Value of Premium Off-Road Tyres

Michelin is holding the Bath Stone Group as an example of the value of opting for quality, premium tyres. According to the tyre maker, the Bath Stone Group is benefitting from a change in tyre policy that has seen tyre longevity on its underground loader shovels rise by 800 per cent, thereby significantly increasing productivity at its Stoke Hill Mine.

Cuban Retreader Poligom Output 56,900 tyres in 2009

A recent article written by Joel Mayor Loran and published by the Granma and Periodico publications in Cuba gives a fascinating insight into the workings of the country’s National Rubber Company – Poligom. According to the article, which is entitled “How to Save a Million Dollars” the Cuban retreading operation has been facing a scarcity of raw materials and retreadable casings.

The Poligom National Rubber Company reportedly runs five factories specialised retreading work, which retreaded 56,900 tyres in 2009. However, the lack of stability in the supply is said to have affected plans to increase production to 90,000 in 2010. In the year to 10 June the retread companies located in the municipality of Cotorro in Havana City, in the central province of Las Villas, and in the eastern provinces of Camaguey, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba received 34,000 casings, 6,000 less than expected.

Titan Makes Two Executive Management Appointments

Two changes to Titan International’s executive management team have been announced by the company’s board of directors. Kent W. Hackamack, vice president of finance and treasurer, has been named executive vice president of corporate development. Hackamack, who joined Titan in 1994 as corporate controller, was appointed vice president of finance and treasurer in 1996. He is a certified public accountant and holds two degrees from Northeast Missouri State University in accounting and computer science. "Titan has been in various negotiations to increase its worldwide footprint in agricultural and mining wheels and tyres. Kent's experience will help us achieve those goals," said chairman and CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr.

Ecclestone: F1 Needs Faster Wearing Tyres

Bernie Ecclestone believes faster wearing tyres will make for more exciting racing in Formula One. According to Tire Review, Ecclestone told Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport he thinks F1 tyres should last no more than 100 kilometres, forcing teams into at least two pit stops. “People want more overtaking," Ecclestone states. “I have a proposal: tyre sets that can be used for a maximum of 100 kilometres, with the one used in qualifying to be used in the first part of the race. This way we'd have more tyre changes at different times and there would be more confusion. The best races are the messy ones.” Ecclestone made no mention that fuel stops have been eliminated from F1 races, removing as many as two pit stops per race.

Goodyear Chooses Bada Steel Weights in US

Hennessy Industries will be the exclusive supplier of Bada steel wheel weights to Goodyear company-owned stores, reports Tire review. Beginning this summer, the weights will be used in some 600 Goodyear Gemini and Just Tires locations across the US.

Ipswich Tyre Group Expands

Ipswich Tyre Group is expanding with the opening of Premier Body Works in Bury St Edmunds, bringing the total number of depots within its group to six. The new site will continue to focus on its vehicle repair business, and Ipswich Tyre Group will introduce Cameo from Cam Systems after working effectively with the industry-specific software platform in its other centres.
