The Acorus wheel, which Michelin and Maxion Wheels first presented as a prototype at the IAA 2017 motor show in Frankfurt, is coming to market next year. Michelin announced the flexible wheel solution’s commercial launch at the China International Import Expo (CIIE), which opened in Shanghai on 4 November.
The Acorus collaboration between Michelin and Maxion Wheels was voted a runner-up in the third annual CLEPA Innovation Awards. CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, named Acorus its third-placed awardee in the Cooperation category. The award was accepted on behalf of the two companies by Pieter Klinkers, chief executive officer of Maxion Wheels, at a ceremony held in The Hague on 13 June.
Aesthetics are decisive when choosing a new car, and large diameter rims and low-profile tyres now even feature on the options list for lower performance models. But while kitting a car out with this combination bumps up its sporting credentials a notch or two, your pride and joy no longer looks the part when standing immobile at the side of the road, tyre destroyed and rim ruined after an encounter with a pothole.
Last September, Michelin and Maxion Wheels jointly presented a flexible wheel solution that features the tyre maker’s Acorus Technology. This solution has been adopted by French driverless vehicle specialist Navya for its autonomous electric shuttle bus, which is already on the roads in five cities around the world. The electric city shuttle is now making its debut in London.
Michelin believes it has helped reinvent the wheel. At the IAA motor show in Frankfurt, Germany, the tyre maker is presenting a new solution together with Maxion Wheels, a product the two companies believe will help eliminate road-based damage to tyres and rims.
