On 1 September 2022, the global crypto currency market was valued at a trillion dollars, but that figure actually peaked at $2.8 trillion in November 2021. And therefore, whichever way you look at it, cryptocurrency is now a huge economic entity in its own right. With roughly 38 and 18 per cent market share respectively, Bitcoin and Ethereum are the two largest out there. Digital currencies bring with them two main features that suggest they are the future: Firstly, because they work on highly encrypted blockchain networks outside the established financial system, they offer the potential for greater efficiency and securing; and secondly, the operate as decentralised entities, taking governments and state banks out of the equation and empowering businesses and individuals with the margins that were only previously available to banks.

Cheng Shin Chongqing plant suspended production for a week

On the afternoon of 16 August Cheng Shin announced that production at its Chongqing factory would be suspended between 16 and 23 August to cooperate with the local government’s power policy. It is reported that Changshou District, Chongqing City, where the Cheng Shin factory is located, has experienced continuous high temperatures recently, and the power supply gap has continued to expand. The local government advocates for industrial enterprises to stop production to ensure electricity consumption for residents and ease the pressure on the power supply.

Michelin looks back at 8 years of Formula E innovation

Michelin is parting ways with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship following the 2021/22 season finale. With Hankook limbering up and ready to take over next year, the French tyre maker has looked back on its eight years with the championship, convinced that its work has “made a concrete contribution to the success enjoyed by Formula E today.”

Goodyear voted Auto Bild summer tyre maker of the year

Leading German motoring magazine Auto Bild has named Goodyear its summer tyre manufacturer of the year. It announced this honour in the 13 April 2022 edition of Auto Bild (issue 15/2022) after declaring the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 winner and eco champion in its main summer 2022 tyre test and the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 victor in its high-performance test. Partner publication Auto Bild Allrad also voted the EfficientGrip 2 SUV joint winner of its summer test.

Continental tyres OE on Porsche Taycan

Porsche has approved three Continental tyre models as original equipment for the Taycan. The all-electric sports car can be delivered from the factory with the Continental PremiumContact 6 summer tyre in the front wheel size 225/55 R 19 XL and size 275/45 R 19 XL at the rear. Customers in European markets can also select WinterContact TS 860 S in the same sizes. Taycan buyers in North America can order their car with all-season Continental ProContact RX tyres in the aforementioned dimensions as well as 245/45 R 20 XL and 285/40 R 20 XL or 265/35 R 21 XL and 305/30 R 21 XL.

USA: Michelin remains atop J.D. Power rankings

It’s 18 years in a row for Michelin. The tyre maker has ranked highest in all segments of the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study and points out that this result marks its 18th consecutive highest ranking in the Luxury category as well as sixth consecutive highest ranking in the Truck/Utility Vehicle category.

Porsche Taycan sets 102mph indoor land speed record on OE tyres

Until recently, the Guinness World Record for the fastest speed by a vehicle indoors stood at 86 mph. That was until Leh Keen’s Porsche Taycan Turbo S was clocked by independent adjudicators at 102.6 mph inside the New Orleans Convention Center. Keen’s all-electric Taycan Turbo S has a maximum of 750 hp, with four-wheel drive to maximize grip, powerful carbon ceramic brakes and the ability to accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in just 2.6 seconds. And what’s more the record was set on the Taycan’s standard fitment original equipment (OE) tyres. But what tyres were they?

Michelin to pursue sustainable motorsport despite Formula E exit

Michelin motorsport director Matthieu Bonardel has given his reaction to the announcement of a changing of the guard in the world’s premier battery-powered single-seater racing series. Despite Hankook’s move to replace Michelin as Formula E tyre supplier after the 2021/2022 season, the French manufacturer continues to believe that “sporting competition and sustainable mobility are inextricably linked.” Michelin was the tyre inaugural supplier to Formula E, which began in 2014/15, and has actively shaped the series as exclusive tyre partner ever since.

Digital transformation in the tyre sector

At the start of May, Zivojin Sekulic of GAJ d.o.o. gave a presentation on the digital transformation of the tyre industry at Guangrao Tyre Conference and Expo 2019.
