Hankook appoints Antal Takacs as marketing director
Hankook Tire Europe appointed Antal Takacs as marketing director on 1 July 2015. In his new role, Takacs takes responsibility for European pricing, product marketing and distribution channel management. Antal Takacs will focus on the further development of a pan-European pricing strategy and the reinforcement of Hankook’s Europe-wide marketing strategy. Our current aim, is to optimise our pan-European marketing strategy, so that we meet our clients’ needs professionally and strengthen the brand awareness in all over Europe”, Hankooks Head of Europe, Ho Youl Pae stated.

Continental AG has announced what it is calling a voluntary tyre exchange programme (as opposed to a recall) of approximately 12,000 truck tyres. The tyre in question is a 205/75R17.5 Conti Hybrid LS3, produced from calendar week 27 in 2014 to calendar week 26 in 2015. The product was mainly sold to original equipment manufacturers in Europe and – to a lesser degree – into the replacement market. Continental stressed that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

Visitor numbers at this year’s Tyrexpo India are 54 per cent up over those for the previous show, reports organiser SingEx Exhibitions Pte Ltd. During the three-day event a total of 2,600 industry specialists from 30 countries passed through the gates at the Chennai Trade Centre to visit the more than 100 confirmed trade exhibitors and to attend scheduled programmes such as TyreTalk. Prior to the show, the organiser stated its expectation of around 2,500 visitors at Tyrexpo India 2015.

The lawyers defending 11 former Pirelli managers convicted over asbestos-related deaths say they will appeal the charges. Yesterday a court in Milan convicted the managers of culpable homicide over the deaths of 24 workers employed at the company’s Bicocca plant in the 1970s and 1980s. The employees died from tumours said to have developed due to exposure from asbestos at the facility.

The US Department of Commerce will issue antidumping and countervailing duty orders on certain passenger car and light truck tyres imported from China after a three-to-three vote by the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) determined the domestic tyre industry is “materially injured” by imports of “subsidised” Chinese tyres that are sold in the USA at “less than fair value.”

Cooper Tire & Rubber has shared news of its work with tyre dealers in China to elevate Cooper brand awareness amongst consumers, including the many first-time car buyers in this enormous market. The tyre maker says that over the past eight months it has collaborated with dealers to introduce a new retail concept. So far this has led to the opening of four Cooper ‘Superfeel Centers’ in China. The first of these outlets opened in Shanghai in November 2014, and this was followed by centres in Shandong (January 2015), Beijing (March 2015) and Chengdu (July 2015). These four sites will be joined by two more Superfeel Centers, in Baoding and Inner Mongolia, by the end of this year.

A bill calling for the introduction of minimum tyre performance standards and compulsory tyre registration has been introduced into the US Senate. This bill, the Tire Efficiency, Safety and Registration Act S.1741, is described by supporters as legislation that would improve consumer safety and vehicle fuel economy, however some sections of the tyre industry have vowed to see the bill defeated.

Maxam showed its new solid tyre range at June’s Recycling Aktiv show at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden airport in June. It was the first time Maxam has taken part in Recycling Aktiv. Last time, more than 10,000 visitors attended the show and, for the 2015 event, there were over 200 names on the exhibitor list. Live demonstrations form an integral part of the show, including a working scrap metal yard. The Maxam stand was manned by personnel from Interpneu; the company’s dealer in Germany, backed up by members of the senior management team from Maxam in Luxembourg. These included Kevin Buckley, sales manager, Europe; Stefan Blindenberg, business development manager, France & Benelux and Peter Kraus, bdm, Germany, Austria & Switzerland. One visitor to the stand was so impressed with the appearance of the tyres and the breadth of the range that he immediately invited Peter Kraus to his company to talk business.
