Tbk, announced the forthcoming opening of a year-round Paris Saint-Germain Academy run by Indonesian first-division club Bali United. This announcement is supported by the implementation of an exchange programme on training skills and methodology between both clubs through the Parisian youth development academy.

Up to almost 1,200 original equipment Pirelli tyres are being recalled in the USA due to concerns that cracks may develop in the tyres’ lower sidewall area. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the P Zero All Season tyres in question are size 275/40R19 101W fitments manufactured between 29 February and 29 October 2016 and fitted as original equipment on Maserati cars.

Cooper Tire & Rubber has completed its purchase of a 65 per cent interest in China-based Qingdao Ge Rui Da Rubber Co., Ltd. (GRT). GRT produces truck and bus radial tyres for global markets and will manufacture these to meet Cooper’s customer needs in North America, as well as in Asia and other markets. In the future, passenger car tyres may also be manufactured at the one-million-square-foot GRT facility, which has room for further expansion.

Setting up factories abroad is not only encouraged by China’s Belt and Road initiative, it is also provides a means of avoiding the tariffs on China-made tyres charged by the USA and a number of other countries. Qingdao Fullrun Tyre Corp. Ltd. recently shared that, after numerous visits from company president Liu Zijin and a team of managers, on 28 September an agreement was signed for the company’s first overseas production facility. The plant will be built in Malaysia and is expected to enter operation in May 2017.

The latest figures suggest that in 2016 we had the third highest level of new trailer registrations ever, surpassed only by the figures for 2007 and 2008. However, there is also “a distinct weakening of the market in the second half of the year” according to CLEAR analysts who suggest the market is now forecasting a weaker fourth quarter than was predicted earlier in 2016. Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are all less buoyant markets than they were assumed to be six months ago.

Reifen China 2016 open its doors at the Shanghai New International exhibition centre today – 1 December. The show organised by Messe Essen in partnership with CURC and co-located with RubberTech appears to have attracted similar numbers of exhibitors and visitors as it did 12 months ago, with much talk at the show related to the pressure overcapacity and US import tariffs have put on the manufacturing business.

Last week, Michelins Pneu Laurent plant in Oranienburg, Germany – the company’s smallest retreading facility in Europe – produced its last retreaded truck tyre. Now the remaining 55-strong plant workforce (Michelin employed 180 people at the Pneu Laurent site a year ago) are engaged with clearing up and disassembling the most important production equipment in preparation for its installation in other Michelin plants.

Sailun Jinyu Group reports that the first all-steel TBR tyre was manufactured in its new factory in Vietnam on 24 November. In announcing the news, the China-based tyre maker notes that it decided to erect a second plant at its Sailun (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. site in order to combat the tariffs in place in the USA. It began work on the factory on 14 March 2016 and produced the first tyre just over eight months later.

The Shanghai Aerospace Industry Co., or SAIC, is said to have submitted the highest bid for Kumho Tire in the preliminary auction. According to Maeil Business News Korea’s Pulse website, the value of the SAIC bid hasn’t been disclosed, however “market experts” recently estimated that bidding for Kumho Tire could reach as high as KRW 1 trillion (£685.8 million).

One Chinese and two Thai partners have agreed to invest in a new joint venture passenger car and truck tyre factory in Thailand to supply both the domestic and export markets. The joint venture company hasn’t yet been named and will be established by June 2017. A total of 1 billion baht (£22.5 million) is to be invested in the new facility.

Visitors to the US-based onsite.michelin.com website are now being met with the message that “this service is no longer being offered.” The mobile programme, whose pilot rollout began last year, promised to take care of tyre purchasing and fitting in “three easy steps”, with tyres and a fitting appointment selected online and the tyres mounted at a location of the customer’s choosing. The tyre maker hasn’t officially commented on its decision to end its OnSite programme, however US publication Tire Business writes that Michelin was “disappointed that unit volumes did not meet expectations.”
