The news that rail fares in the UK are set to rise by up to 6.2 per cent in the New Year might well have made tyre dealers optimistic of more business, but rail users aren't happy and they are not alone.

Yokohama HPT expands wheel size selection
Yokohama HPT has expanded the size ranges of its Mugello and Rivage wheels in the UK. Sized from 17-20”, both wheels are available in staggered fitments to suit a wide range of cars. The Mugello is suited particularly to those requiring wider rims at the rear and is available in Hyper Silver or Matt Black. The Rivage can be specified in either Hyper Silver or Gloss Black with milled edges to the spokes.
CES accepts ‘significant investment’ to fuel growth
CES (UK) Ltd, one of the country’s leading distributors of car parts, has announced that it has accepted “significant investment” in order to accelerate plans to expand its current network and further strengthen its position in the UK automotive aftermarket. Founders Howard Warren and Charles Colton will continue to support the CES strategy for growth whilst, the existing board of directors, led by managing director Steve McCann, will continue to manage the company operations.
Parts Alliance growing while CES (UK) Ltd accelerates expansion
CES (UK) has announced new investment in order to expand more rapidly. According to the companies involved, this strategic move will “accelerate plans to increase The Parts Alliance network and further strengthen [its] position in the UK automotive aftermarket.” CES (UK) remains a key member of The Parts Alliance.
point-S UK holds TPMS seminar
point-S UK recently held its first member only TPMS seminar as a result of recognising the importance of impending legislation and increasing numbers of TPMS equipped cars on the road. TPMS and consumables supply partner Autogem hosted the half-day session at the company’s headquarters in London.
Regional workshop events aimed at highlighting Hunter range
Those interested in getting to grips with the latest advances in Hunter alignment and wheel balance technology may do well to give Pro-Align a call. The wheel equipment specialist says it will soon hold a series of regional events; titled ‘A Service Vision of Tomorrow, Today!’, these are aimed at demonstrating the newest additions to the Hunter range in a workshop environment.
Pro-Align boosts head office team, warehouse capacity
Wheel alignment specialist Pro-Align says it is enjoying one of its most successful years ever, and to accommodate this it is expanding its administration and sales departments. Five new employees have joined the team at Pro-Align’s Towcester head-office which serves as a hub for its UK operations. They are; aftersales administrator Sophie Yeates, sales administrator Claire Simpson, accounts assistant Beverley Shepherd, marketing assistant Alastair King, while regional sales support is boosted by Stacey Hawkes.
Kumho strike over
In a disclosure submitted to the Korea Stock Exchange, Kumho Tire reports that the strike announced on 16 August is already over. The tyre maker says normal production resumed at both its Gwangju and Gokseong plants in South Korea on 17 August. Kumho Tire shares rose 3.6 per cent following this announcement.
Nankang launches SUV winter range
Nankang has added to its winter tyre line-up with the release of the Winter Activa SV-55. The new SUV-specific tyre is available in 11 sizes for 16 to 20-inch rim diameters and in H, V and W speed ratings. The Taiwanese tyre maker says the asymmetrical tread pattern used on the SV-55 provides high drainage performance, while the large blocks on the outer edge are said to provide comfortable cornering maneuverability.
Goodyear launches Spanish language website for US consumers
In a move that recognises Spanish’s status as the second most widely spoken language in the United States, Goodyear Tire & Rubber has introduced a Spanish language website targeted at North American consumers. Through this site, Goodyear hopes to “provide better appeal to a growing Hispanic tyre-buying population.”
Blizzak production begins in China
Bridgestone has begun manufacturing its Blizzak winter range in China. The tyre maker celebrated the start of Blizzak production in its Tianjin plant this month. The factory, which opened in 2000, recently benefitted from a capacity expansion programme that saw output increased from 16,500 units per day to 25,300; it is not clear what proportion of total output will be dedicated to winter tyres.

GiTi Tire’s rapid growth in the UK truck tyre segment
Unlike the passenger car tyre side of the business, which had been established and built up over several years before GiTi opened up its UK operation, the truck tyre segment had to be established from virtually nothing. Now the company claims a unit market share that puts it close to third in the UK.
The label’s coming, but will it deliver what consumers need?
Regulation (EC) No 1222/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2009 on the labelling of tyres with respect to fuel efficiency and other essential parameters – to give our new label legislation its full and proper name – comes into force in just a few months. The EU has agreed upon a system of rating tyres using three performance parameters, and almost every new passenger car, light commercial vehicle and truck tyre (C1, C2 and C3 tyres) sold in Europe will come with this rating. But even before its mandatory implementation, murmurs of label scepticism can be heard. Generally, these comments hinge on the label’s limitations, and whether these will hinder consumers from purchasing the tyre best suited to their needs.
Pirelli celebrates decade in North American headquarters
Pirelli Tire North America has celebrated its 10th anniversary as a resident of Rome, Georgia, and although some of the company’s business operations have moved to New York in recent years, the facility still serves as the company’s manufacturing base, one of five global R&D centres and as headquarters for Pirelli’s NAFTA Region.
